Tripod Head Compatibility

I have ordered a Kirk BH-3 ball head, but it won't be ready for a trip that I have to take in a few weeks... I am getting the Gitzo G-1228, and a cheap head that I can use until I get the Kirk. I must admit that I am a little confused as to the compatibility of heads/tripods... Is the bogen / manfrotto 486RC2 Compact Ball Head compatible with the Gitzo G-1228?

But the RC2 QR plates will not fit the Kirk head once it arrives.

Almost all tripod heads have a 3/8-16 inch screw. The few that don't use a 1/4-20 inch screw and those usually have a spring loaded insert so you can use them on a tripod that has a 3/8 inch screw.

My Gitzo 2228 tripod has a 3/8 inch screw and I believe the Manfrotto 486 ball head does too. (The Mafrotto ball head I have is a 468RC and it uses a 3/8 inch thread.)
