I got these two but missed a great shot of a White Heron in flight. The images came out soft. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to shoot birds in flight, F-Stop, Shutter Speed, Mode, etc.
Thanks to anyone for any advice.

Bob

A couple of nice shots, I'd say.
Birds in flight with the 100-400... First, take a valium. This lens is very frustrating for birds in flight. They have to be large, slow and close, really, or you have to be very, very good with tracking. CDS is hysterical when he tries flight shots with the 100-400 - he puts out a non-stop barrage of curses, generally. :-)
AI Focus is the way to go, and preferably on a bright morning to get the light low so it lights up the bird. Switch to focus with *, too. And track track track shoot! Don't bother bursting more than two shots IMHO - the others will be a waste. Teach yourself to track with both eyes open, and wait for "the moment" to shoot.
Gulls are a good lesson. Or 5 or 6 lessons. Just get them against a nice blue sky - cloudy or overcast days are not good days for flight shots.
While I love my 100-400, birds in flight was THE reason I got the 400 Prime. There's no comparison between the two lenses - the Prime kicks butt on flight shots.

I believe you. My question is: What makes the Prime better than the Zoom for flight shots?
Thanks for the help.
