Shot these yesterday, and edited some a little larger for another site, and then had to get to bed early for the WRC of today. So just resized them to 800px now.

The 757-200 was the highlight of the show. They had two on display, one parked in the 40 Squadron hangar, and one doing aerial displays.

The shortest Boeing take-off I've ever seen. Was airborne in a few hundred metres.

Showing its full performance, climbing quickly.

Dummy landing downwind, before pulling up hard and full power. Incredible.

Very nice stuff!

Its a shame that is pretty much the full extent of our airforce, all thats missing are the Herc's, which I assume are all over seas.

And was this advertised?
I had no idea it was even on, and my new boss used to work there up untill a few weeks ago!

Great shots, I really like this one in particular, the closeness of the front rotor is a great effect

I liked all the pictures. Very clean looking. The Ian has in his reply is one of the best.

Yes, it was advertised several times in the Herald near the movie section as it is every year. HEHE.
I think they could have drawn a much larger crowd if they advertised it better, and also DIDN'T put it on same weekend as WRC. I'm sure many of those motorsport fans as myself, are into aircraft as well.
800 pixel images, really don't do these justice. I edit most my shots at 1152x768 for airliners.net and that brings out a bit more detail, unseen in these shots. Such as registrations are easier to see.

Hercules? Just have to ask. I was trying to post all the 757 shots. I also have cockpit shots of a herc and 757... (They really would not be good quality at 800, so I've edited them for 1400px).

Nice photos.

The "800 by" format does hurt. I guess that means we need to get sites we can link to:-0 (I'm in the same boat)

I like the 757 dummy landing.

I had to come back for a second look. Okay, maybe the fifth or sixth look. My favorite is the Orion with the bay open. I don't know why but it really intrigues me.

You'd be surprised what airliners can do with no cargo, little fuel, and no people on board. :D

A Sigma 70-300mm lens... Not the quality of L, but still try my best in panning, and done thousands of aircraft shots already, and have a few on airliners.net

I saw a couple of guys with 100-400L, probably the next lens I would like within the next year. (One of them was probably joeseph here with D60).

<grin> who me? looking at your great shots, you were about 20m west of where I was...

I kept moving back a bit, onto the paved area, as was being swarmed by the flying ants. I was covered by hundreds of them at one point. I'm surprised none went down my throat!

I was just looking through my shots again. A pity I didn't shoot some wideangle shots of the area was in. It's a typical thing I would do!

Did you see the two guys in black, with black bags, one with 20D+grip and 100-400L.. They were just to the East of me... Something you may have noticed, as it's a 100-400L also. ;)

them flying insects were bizarre!
sorry didn't really notice anyone with a 100-400, remember seeing someone with what looked like a 70-200 and 1.4 TC though.
Also there was a woman photographer from the airforce, poor soul had to put up with n!kon gear.
Must say I miss the Skyhawks, now them's real airforce...

Woah goose...There was a PBY Catalina there? It's one of my favorite planes. I have a big model hanging from my cieling in my room that I made a long time ago. :D

HAHAHAA. That's bloody hilarious.
I was wondering what are the chances of a photographer being a member here. And the pic I post, happens to be you. I didn't see that personalised plate though.

I'm at the V8 Supercars this weekend. All 3 days. :)

Cya there mate.

I would have possibly said something about your 100-400L, but as you had company (a friend?), I'm not one to start up conversations like that. :)

What was the other guy shooting with? Lens? Didn't get close enough to see what it was.

Great shots Warren, love the ones of the choppers. Hah it's so cool that people from the boards see each other out in the field, wish I could randomly run into someone, but I'm not out on my own shooting stuff yet :(

Haha! Yeah pretty funny...

Yes Jackal, thats the PBY from Ardmore - a short drive south of here. I have a couple more on my website if your interested. What scale is your model?

Shoulda said something, i was going to. You have a pretty impressive rig for a young fella, i thought at the time 'wish i had gear like that at your age' *lol*

Yeah thats my buddy, a photog newbie. His is a Nikon D70 with a Nikon 70-300 cheapy lens. He does ok and is having fun which is everything.

Next time i see you, take a few shots with the 100-400 if your interested in getting one. You can compare the shots when you get home. I sure as hell weren't getting the results you are with the Sigma.

Im at the V8's with my kids casually on sat, and possibly for work on sunday (Herald). Fingers crossed that press pass comes through :D There will be WAY better looking things to shoot than other photogs my friend *wink* See ya there!

Arsonist: Just get out there mate... there is always something happening to practice on...

Cheers... Goose

PS: Maybe i should get a POTN strap so we can recognise each other...

Comparing the 100-400L, yours are clearly better out the shot itself. Have you post edited much? I had to USM a couple times as usual, and very slightly change levels. My Sigma is most disappointing at 300mm. Just wish I had a great L telephoto. Remember, I work at Westpac, so it's rather easy to get some money thrown in, but I don't want to get more debt at my young age. Need to actually make some money.

I was thinking of a photographers pass to V8s... It's a special weekend. The last one.

Have you had things posted for the Herald before?!!

That's my dream. The daily back page of A section is my favourite. Sometimes I feel I could have shots of that quality up there. I guess just keep practicing, borrow their L lens, and get known. :D
Even the full time Western Leader photographer, Fiona Goodall. Wouldn't mind that job.

I guess I'll be seeing you Saturday. I'll be there definately Friday, first thing. I will probably try and post maybe a top 10 images each evening. Tomorrow I have off, and will be at NZAA for the lunchtime/afternoon area.

Great series of shots there, I just love the 757 going ballistic, fantastic composition.

I knew I recognised that Orion. I saw it on a murky day in the UK last year - Waddington airshow

Looks like the same one

Hi again Wazza...

Re: Post editing - My workflow is based around C1 and PS(CS). The 100-400L is quite contrast neutral and generally needs
a bump, but other than that, the usual culprits... USM, sizing and cropping is all. The color and tone is pretty sharp.
Im sure you will be very happy with the 100-400L when you get one, smart choice not getting into debt over it.

My sigma let me down too many times to be viable. Not shooting for a living doesnt justify mediocre quality. I still
think you are getting great results with yours.

Yes, the last one sadly...

Re:Herald... No. Its a funny situation, even if you work here. The photogs do this for a living and rely on it for $.
The last thing they need is staff (or the public) taking that commission, but thats not to say non-staff photogs
dont get published. We have a 10TB image library and that grows by a significant amount per week, so there is no
shortage of image material. I have offered images before, IF they get used someday, great! if not then i dont feel
bad about the commission thing :-)

Yep more than likely see you there. The press pass for sunday doesnt look good, but oh well. Get what we can
from the fences, eh?

Take it easy...
