Flash not enough?

i have noticed eversince i used a digital camera that the flash is not sufficient? hence most of my pix are kind of dark.

do i need to supplement by using another flash unit connected to a slave?

yes, but since most digital cameras have a pre flash to set the white balance you need to find a flash that is for digital cameras or one that lets you set the triggering flash
