View Full Version : A couple of different processing methods

Hi folks,
A couple of shots from my home city. The first was a pseudo-HDR conversion of a single RAW file, then loaded into Photoshop for further tweaking.
So was the second, however I went a step further and made it look more like a painting.
To be honest I'm not keen on either of them but thought I'd share them here regardless.

Your post processing skills wow me. I like both, though the dramatic effect of the first one appeals to me.

Basically I shot in RAW trying to get as much dynamic range as possible (there was slight clipping in the clouds but not too much) and ISO 100.
I imported the file into Photomatix and increased the micro-contrast, decreased the light smoothing, increased the luminosity and strength.
Once I was reasonably happy I saved the file as a 16-bit TIFF and then loaded it into Photoshop. I increased the vibrancy a little while decreasing the saturation. It didn't look right in black and white, and I wasn't keen on the colour version, but a halfway point looked about right.
Finally I increased the brightness towards the centre of the image, to pick out the Minster better, while at the same time adding a gentle vignette to the rest of the image, to draw the eye in.

Apart from the technicalities of the shot, I really like the processing on the first one better.
As far as the shot goes...tis a tiny bit crooked: leaning to the left. Other than that I like this a lot.

#1 is definitely the better one.
Nice shot too BTW. ;-)

I absolutely love #1!
I have to be the odd one, maybe, but I really like #2 also. It is different, but it has a nice, soft, dreamy look to it. It does remind me of a painting. I like the colors in it better also.

The composition is really nice in #1 with the framing of the trees and the lead in.
The only thing that looks like a painting in #2 is the grass, the other parts need some work.

i like the post processing of the first one. well done
however, i personally would crop off the bottom part a bit more (right at the bottom of the trees on the right) to give more of a 1/3 view to the whole image.

No the leading line that the beginning of the wall on the left creates would be destroyed with a crop. Then all you would have is a distracting blob (of the part where the wall goes vertically up) right in the foreground, bottom left.

hence the word 'personally' :)
cheers
