I think you are right about the background, but you can't let a great opportunity go by. I generally don't like replacing backgrounds, but in this case I think it would be a big improvement if you could find a nice, complementary scene to put in.

Actually, I kinda' like it with the background.

First, it's a candid, and not a portrait, right?

Second, I like the fact that the license plate on the car and the Jeepney in the background are there. It gives the photo a geographical context which, for a candid, I don't think is such a bad thing...

yup! its a candid! :D
I just don't like the background because its waaaaay too bright.. but then it gives a lot of emphasis on the subjects :)
