Firstly define your terms:
how sharp is sharp?
what size crop?
what ISO?
what lens?
what in-camera parameters?
Secondly;
does it matter what the camera produces if the finished, ie. processed/manipulated, image is what the photographer is happy with?

There are auto-fix buttons in programs that would do the trick so that you wouldn't have much to do if you are worried about processing time.

just iso 100 - any lens below £1500 100 percent crop as for how sharp, a photo that looks sharp and would not be said to be to soft by the pros in here any parameters. can it be done ? thats all im asking up to now im being told that software sorts it i know that and that was not the question.

What, besides the 20D, are you using, that you are having sharpness problems. Give the kind experts here something to work with. Just because someone else can, or can't, take a sharp picture to show you, has nothing to do with your personal results.

20D ~ Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 @ 57mm ~ ISO 100 ~ 1/250 ~ f13
While I was doing some stock photo shots with a light tent and strobes I shot this one of my cat wondering what I was doing. The only post processing done was to up the exposure a little as the camera was set for the exposure inside the light tent.

I have my 300D set to it's sharpest, but after experimenting abit i found the pics STILL tend to need sharpening.
One thing that does make alot of difference to apparent sharpness is the contrast setting (!)
Try upping that ,but take notice to make sure you don't start blowing the highlights more often-i'm not sure yet how the in camera contrast setting effects that
Wolf's photo above looks good- mostly due to reasonably strong contrast (the flash in the eyes and elsewhere helps too, nice)
It's difficult to take much more from that example though because certain kinds of detail -such as hair- show up very strongly in digital images

Parameter 2 all set to "0".
Image sharpness, contrast and saturation right out of the camera does vary depending on what lens you are using. I got rid of two lenses in the past month because of that reason (dull and unsharp without a lot post processing).
But 95% of the time you will still need to do some post processing of images from any DSLR.

This is not the sharpest lens in the wood shed (28-85USM) but it's what I had at the moment.

I KNOW a better lens will produce a sharper image, so I'm leery of even posting this.

Nothing wrong with that photo right out of the camera, that is very nice.
