I also posted these in nature, I should have put them here though. They are for a photo contest my company puts on for it's nature garden. Thanks so much in advance for your words of wisdom. New to 40D, these are my fist posts from it.

1. isn't working for me because too much is in focus and yet what is meant to be in focus is somewhere oof (i hope that didn't sound retarded). Namely some of the white flowers (no clue what their name is in english) are oof and yet they're the centerpiece and the brightest thing in the photo... however the giant half-in-focus cactus on the left is kinda closing the scene up... anyway, i'd get a bit closer... try to deepen the focus on the white flowers and yet be far enough from whatever is in the back to totally blur it out...
2. is working for me quite a lot, except it would be a lot better if the top of the tallest plant wasn't cut off...

Does the cropping on this one work better? I know the bud is way at the top of the edge, but the photo looks TOO cropped if I take too much bottom off, and I wanted the red flowers in the bokeh too. Thoughts, please?

I like the low key effect of #2. It looks like evening twilight.
In #1 the rendering is too dark - it could be made more attractive by simply running up the brightness a little.

2 is a keeper now that you have the top of the plant in the middle. If it was my shot and I had a little more room to spare at the top, I'd use it. But it is still a keeper regardless. #1 I'm on the fence about, I like how the cactus borders the white flowers but there is not enough in focus, some, but not enough.
