2nd curtain sync

I have a 40D and using a 430ex on camera. I was trying to set 2nd curtain sync,it was grayed out. I did not have the option until I used the built-in flash. Is it possible to get 2nd curtain with external flash?

It sure is... Did you try it with the external flash attached and turned on?

I do it all the time with my 40D and my 580 EXII.

Good question - I just checked mine (again I have the 550 EXII) I own the 420 but a friend of mine has it.

With mind I turned on the camera and the flash and went under External Flash Settings and was able to choose 1st curtain and change it to second curtain.

I can't really believe that the flash wouldn't support it but I suppose it is possible. Even if I put my flash in manual mode it still allows me to set it that way.

Do you have a copy of the manual? I checked online and it isn't available for download anymore.

I have never used or even seen the 430EX, so I don't know what buttons there are. But on my 580EX, you simply choose the 2nd sync by pressing a tiny round button on the back of the flash.

The reason it is grayed out is that the 430EX is not compatible with your 40D's in-camera flash menu. Only the 430EX II and 580EX II can access all features of the in-camera flash menu. On all older flash units you must set 2nd curtain sync on the flash itself.

I pulled out the manual and found out it has to be set on the unit, thanks msowsun.

P16 of the 430EX manual says "Press the -/_ button so that >>> is displayed." -/_ is the lightning bolt symbol.
