I am a little confused. Am I right in understanding that the Canon 580 EX II and Sigma EF-500 DG Super are compatible and that the 580 as a master can communicate TTL info to the Sigma as a slave? I am looking at a 2nd flash to pair up with my 580. Another 580 would be great, but cost is causing me to look at the Sigma.

Yes, the Sigma 500 Super and also 530 Super are both compatible with the Canon 580EX ETTL wireless master/slave system.

They will also operate with their own built in optical slave in manual mode. (no ETTL)

Yes. Msowsun's info is correct. I have the 580EX, 580EX II, and Sigma EF 500 DG SUPER, and they all live happily. Sigma's Optical slave mode is correct too.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the quick response. This is probably the route I will go.

I have used a Sigma 500 DG Super as a ETTL slave quite nicely with my 580EX II. No hiccups at all so far in the process.

It's the way I went and I have also had no problems.

I have these two flash units and I'm wondering I can do ratios with them in ETTL.

Am I correct in thinking that the Master (580EXII) has to be in group A and Slave (Sigma) has to be in group B? If that's true how do I set the group on the Sigma?

Resurrecting this thread. I'm interested in getting these two to work together as well, with ratios and with the ST-E2 transmitter?

Edit: Doh! Just answered my own question following a bit of evidence from another thread. Yes, the ST-E2 will work fine with ratios using the 580exII and 500 Super as slaves.
