Here's another interesting article I came across... you may have to be registered at the shootsmarter site for viewing:

http://www.shootsmarter.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=375&acat=41

I'm not sure if I necessarily agree with everything that's stated, but I'm acquainted with the author. He is the tech support manager at the commercial lab I use and quite a pleasant and sharp individual - always very helpul when you call with questions. I do like his concept though of "trickling down" older cards to less critical tasks, or giving them to non-pro's. - Stu

Funny :lol: - now don't get your gotchies all in a bunch..... it's not spam. I did consider a cut and paste job, but then thoughts of "copyright" came to mind, whether or not that's the case - but I do respect the author.

The site is actually informative at times and if I recall correctly, I get about one email/week regarding info, articles, events, that sort of thing. It contains some noted folks and successful photogs who enjoy sharing their viewpoints.

Stu - if you still have any Prozac after emailing Tim, maybe someone else could use some?

This is one of those 'things', in using lots of cards for various applications (routers, embedded devices, cameras, etc) I've had one out of a couple hundred cards actually fail, and that one was fixed by replacing the circuit board. Most of the cards I have seen 'die' had some sort of wonky file system problem, which is on some level either fixable or recoverable depending on ones level of technical skill.

All that said peace of mind counts for a lot, and CF and other media are getting cheap enough that replacing it every year or two is a minor cost to achieve it. Though Id be curious what formatting the card every time you put it into a camera does for the lifespan, I don't think I've ever tested that.

Content at that site is copyrighted. POTN takes copyright very seriously. If you don't want to read it there, don't. But don't ask anyone to violate another's copyright. How would you like someone to start using your photos without your permission?

Stu, one could quote and attribute the quote to the original site. Or one could provide a summary in the web version of Cliff Notes with restated (rephrased) highlights that you find of particular interest., and attribute the summary to the detailed original. Neither would be violation of copyright, would it?

Quotes in the entirety exceed "fair use" restrictions. For Pete's Sake, people. If you really want to read it, register at the site that provided the content. Doesn't the creator deserve some of the benefit? That's what copyright is for, after all.

Thanks for the clarification Jon (and a little bit of a chuckle now that it's evening ) - I was giving myself a headache trying to figure out the best way to present it.... likely the coffee DT's, and then just decided I was too darn lazy to paraphrase. Besides, my morning break was up at that point ;).

I was only expecting a few key sentences, not copying paragraphs!

Whatever I have read suggests that the duty-life cycle of flash memory is in the order of 100,000 cycles.

Or you can summaries it in your own words for us.

ya i got carried away, but to be fair, the op did not say that you NEED to be registered. he also did not lay it all on the table in first post and say that he cannot say what it is because it's copyrighted.

i was not suggesting him post copyrighted material, as how would i know it was, without registering?????

you must admit that he was not forthright in his original post.

shame on me for showing my being upset, but shame on him for leading me there in not being forthright.

apologies.

ps, muscle, im not a dude or bud, but no big deal.

He clearly stated, "you may have to be registered at the shootsmarter site for viewing".

Basically, life cycle of about two 30Ds before my CF cards blow up.

he said MAY not NEED. sorry to nitpick, but there are reasons for different words, in that they have different meaning. may is not a synonym for need. besides, he really was not fully forthright about it. bad analogy, but its like saying that something is free, except that you may be charged. (will you or wont you...its simple). it doesnt matter.

Well, the warning was given, nonetheless. That was being 'forthright'. Besides, what is the consequence of not knowing if you need to be registered?...at worst case you first try the link and then discover that you pressed the mouse button needlessly because you don't want to register. No harm in that, no virus infected your PC, did it? No porn ads popped up mercilessly, did they? Just Alt-backarrow out. So if no 'harm' resulted, why a problem?! (I didn't bother trying the link, because I knew I didn't want to bother with registration).

Frankly, I don't remember anymore if one MUST register in order to read the general articles. I registered nearly three years ago and their terms of use may have changed in that time, since their site knows the cookies on my PC. Sometimes things don't get remembered beyond morning coffee....; never an intent to mislead.

My turn to nitpick. Is "retarded" really the correct word to be using? Honestly, I cannot understand why people feel the need to use "retarded" to explain anything that isn't to their liking. Obviously I'm not saying everyone does, and I realize that it has become prevalent in our society, but please... think before you type/speak.

Whatever I have read suggests that the duty-life cycle of flash memory is in the order of 100,000 cycles.

In My day job I deal with this quite often. We have 3 different factories we deal with; 2 warranty to 500K read/write cycles and the other to 1 million.

That's for each sector on the flash drive; which itself has a randomization chip to even out the wear/tear on each sector of the card/drive. We tried to do acceptance testing to destruction; but have given that up long ago!

The only thing you truly need to worry about is never defrag a solid state drive. As long as you don't do that; you should hit the guaranteed life of a card with no problems.

first of all, ya he wasn't retarded. but i see no problem with that word...i dont understand why you do. retarded means delayed or slower. retarded bombs, etc. discriminate means discerning. i discriminate every day to figure out what i am going to wear...really now. if i hit a nerve because of something personal, dont make that my problem. take words in context. then we all understand each other. dont ever go to any stand up comedy shows either.

as for the last post before this, why never defrag a cf card? what is the effect? what about wiping it with 1's and 0's...whatever you call that process.

sapearl

Geeez, let it go already - old news, time to move forward . But that is an excellent question you pose about not defragging solid state drives..... was wondering that myselft.
