I am looking to get an external hard drive to backup photos for clients and such. I am looking to get either 500GB or 1TB. Can anyone recommend a drive and where I could get a good price?

Thanks guys/

I use th WD MyBook 1TB drives. I just bought one off Staples with a coupon I found online, which gave me $25 off - brought the price below $100. Just google Staples coupons - you'll have to pay a nominal fee for it (I paid $1.50).

I use a Seagate Freeagent Pro; a 5-year warranty and firewire were important features for me.

Do you want to use this drive in one location, or do you want it portable? For the former I'd go along with the WD MyBook recommendation. For the latter I use a 500GB WD Passport - which is powered by the USB cable. Easily the best portable storage solution I've ever used.

I just got a WD Elements 640GB couple weeks ago. It's great because it's not too big and it's not loud at all. I bought it mainly for backup at home.

I like the My Books too - I have a 500 Gig and a 1 TB I just picked up at Target for $99.

if you have firewire or eSATA connections, don't skimp and get an external HD with such connections.

USB2.0 sucks.

i currently have a variant of this HD, and despite the reviews on amazon, i like it a lot.

I have an e-sata hard drive, I turned off write caching in windows, and it went really slow. I turned it back on and it goes double the speed, maybe better. I can't hot swap it anyway, my motherboard doesn't seem to support it with the particular enclosure I have.

I have an eSATA port on my new machine and after two cables I finally got it going last night. It did appear faster than USB 2.0, but I have some tests to run to see how much faster.

I haven't tried hot swapping yet, but my mobo is supposed to support it so we shall see.

i had a real crummy experience with a WD mybook from buy.com, and won't be going back anytime soon (to either). i've been eyeing up this iomega prestige 500gb.

really good reviews on it, and only $78. i currently use a iomega prestige portable and a seagate freeagent go without issues, but i want a desktop ext hd, and the above will likely be the one i get.

unfortunately, my MBP doesn't support eSATA either unless i buy an express card adapter.

i tested firewire800 vs USB2.0 last night. wasn't technical, just moved stuff from my external HD to my MBP HD. firewire 800 showed to be twice as fast as USB 2.0.

I am now running 2 500GB WD My Books and they have been working perfect till early this morning when one of them decided that it didn't want to wake up.

hey, at least you got SOME use out of it. lol

the last WD external drive i bought was dead on arrival, and buy.com wouldn't let me return it, and WD would only offer me a refurb unit as it's replacement.

yeah, i won't be going back to either.

If you really want to protect your photos, check out the models with dual drives.

And if you REALLY want to protect your photos check out online storage offerings. It can really be quite inexpensive for off-site storage. http://www.jungledisk.com/
