Hi all,
Am definately looking to purchase the following
24-70L 2.8
70-200L 2.8

and later either the 300L or
100-400L

My Brother is lending me his 50-500'Bigma' for the summer to give me some 'length'
My question is please...
I was going to buy the Canon 1.4x Tele to use with the 70-200L, will this tele work with the 'Bigma', or would i need the Sigma or other teleconverter

Any help appreciated, as have not used teleconverters before.

Kind Regards

Blade,

welcome to the forum :D

There's a very helpful teleconverter 'sticky' (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41922) located exactly 3 threads above yours (at the time you wrote this  )

In a nutshell... it might work with the 50-500 (teleconverters do not work with all lenses, because the front element of the Canon and Sigma teleconverters is not recessed and might be in the same place as the rear element of some lenses), but you'll lose autofocus with it and it will be very slow (f/9 at 500 mm) anyway.

So the suggestion would be to get one that works great with the 70-200 (that would be the Canon 1.4 one), as you most likely won't use it on the 50-500 very often, anyway.

Best regards,
Andy

Hi all,

Have ordered the 24-70 and 70-200 (IS), plus 1.4TC for now,
I have read the sticky and have a further question...

Is it Tcon to lens and then attach to camera, or is it tcon to camera and then attach the other lens (70-200) in my case?

Kind regards

Manufacturers recommend mounting the T-con to the back of the lens first,. then either mount lens and T-con to the camera,.. (for smaller lenses)

... or mount camera onto back of T-con/Lens assembly.. (for larger lenses)

Essentially the same thing in either case,. just slight variation on which is the tail and which is the dog do to size/weight.

Okay. I've read through the sticky, and searched the internet, but there has been no concise explanation as to - - - -why the TC can't be used on smaller primes, i.e., a 50mm, or even a 28-85 small zoom. What gives? The autofocus? The exposure? Or the actual physical construction in the position of the rear elements? Seems to me if you can mount it, it will work (albeit with less functionality). Is this right or wrong?

Chaz,

It won't mount. Pretty sure it says this in the sticky a number of times,. but yes this is the limitation. For the T-cons to work as well as they do,. they are made to work in a specific way with specific lenses. By doing so,. they simply will not "fit" on other lenses for which they were never intended to work with.

These are the limitations of the Canon and corresponding Sigma T-cons anywyas,..

Kenko and Tamron apperently market some T-cons that avoid this issue to some extent,.. making these T-cons a little more universal. But they are not considered to be as good for the same reasons.

Hi Chaz
I'm just backing up what Andy already said in an ealier post,
its the projecting element that stops the Canon extenders fitting any lens thats not in my most recent list in the above sticky (already mentioned by CDS.

just took this for you, it may help explain.
Note the projection on the Canon 1.4 x but not on the 2x teleplus.
(not a perfect shot hand held at 1/10th . 50mm)

My Kenko 1.4 and 2.0 both work fine with the 50mm f1.8 and both AF. No difference in image quality that I can see.

Thanks mucho CDS, HuckaBuck, and condyk. I see the reason now. Things have sure gotten complicated in the last 25 years. :( I was thinking about getting the 1.4x to play with now while I save up for the 70-200. Looks like a moot point.

My Kenko 1.4 and 2.0 both work fine with the 50mm f1.8 and both AF. No difference in image quality that I can see.

I might have to try one of these out until the 70-200 is purchased.

Thanks guys.

Nonsense. I have Canon's FD 1.4x TC for the old, pre-EOS, camera line, and it's just the same, with a protrusion that won't allow you to use it on most lenses. And that dates back at least 25 years.
