I was just about to buy a laptop for shooting tethered when I read that there is a lag time involved between pressing the shutter and download to the laptop and CF card lasting 1-3 seconds.
True/false?

Try it with your current machine, laptop/desktop shouldn't make any difference.

Well, of course. Just like it takes a few seconds for the file to be written to the CF card...
It takes a while for the data to be transferred...
How long depends on the camera (file size) and connection speed (FW, USB2)

Does it effect the buffer, can you use Servo mode and rap off 10 images like I can do in my Ds3 untethered and have them shoveled onto a CF card as well as onto the laptop?
Hooking it up to my desktop doesn't seem viable as I was going to go with a sub $500 laptop.

When shooting tethered with either a 1D2 and Eos Utility / DPP (my setup) or a 1D2Mk2 and C1Pro (work) you can shoot whatever way you like, and the images will get on the laptop eventually... It does take some time however. I think about comparable to transferring the images from camera to laptop instead of using a card reader to DL...
I think both programs can be set to record to the CF card as well. (not entirely sure on C1pro)
If for some reason the connection to the laptop is dropped, the images will be written to CF card anyhow.
