Went out to the San Diego Zoo today. Here is a sampling. I'll post more as I get them resized...

Not sure what this is called, but it was pretty cool. I didn't think it would sit still long enough for me to grab a shot:

The obligatory San Diego Zoo photo:

I call him "Mini-Chimp":

As I would walk along, this one would follow me, and then stop and stare right at me whenever I stopped:

Like I said, just a short sampling...

Steve, I believe that first one is a meercat(sp?). My daughters favorite at the zoo and WAP.

I like the "mini-chimp"!

You have some nice shots! The first one is a meercat. (African native realted to the mongoose). Did you happen to get any shots of lions? Which lens were you using?

Shots #1 and #3 were taken with the 70-300mm QCL, and #2 and #4 were taken with the 85mm f/1.8. I didn’t take note of exposure times or anything, although the ISO was at 200.

Unfortunately, the lions, tigers, and bears (really, I couldn’t make that up) were all enjoying their naps in the darker recesses of their enclosures, so I wasn’t able to get any shots of them…

Great shots, Steve! Don't you hate it that the orangs are now behind glass at the zoo? I liked it much better when they had an open air exhibit!
Anyway, it sounds like we may have some panda babies to see pretty soon :)

Those are some fine shots, Steve.

#2 shocked me somewhat, though--I thought Mr. Brando died a while back? :)

I guess everything is done in the name of safety. They had a Panther, which was very awake and active, behind a fence of 1"X2" steel mesh. I guess they don't want the cat getting it's paws into the openings and pulling it down (this cat was enormous). Unfortunately, it also precluded getting anything resembling a decent shot.

The bad part about shooting through glass is the reflection. I took a lot of shots yesterday in which hadn't paid close enough attention to them, and the shots suffered.

Oh well, live and learn...

Steve,
These are great. Any camparison to the other "wild animals" you shoot?

Well, I've lived in San Diego for 20 years, and I think this is the third time I've been to the zoo. But hey, hang around; I should be posting more zoo photos sometime in 2012!
