Thanks for the link chopper, I think I will open a thread in a proper area of this forum, and write my ongoing experience. I bet someone out there would be thankful. I searched around the forum and couldn't find any good gathering of experience with stock photo. Could be that I used the wrong search words, but stock photo wasn't giving my much. On the post I have posted about it I got some good response, but also those "search on it" or "google on it" cind of answer.

Just watch out for the "micro is ruining photography" people. They are pretty passionate. I saw a 30-something page debate between how microstock is a viable income stream meant to diversify income and how it's the ruination of photographers the world over because magazines, et al, don't pay for photography anymore. blah blah blah

personally, i can feel the pain of the photog that was making a living with traditional stock, but things are so tight in microstock right now that it takes a heck of a photo to even be accepted, imo. and with the pennies per download, you really have to have some winners to make a living doing it this way with the time comittment involved. its a niche environment that fits the needs of its customers.....and that is plain old-fashioned business.

i tried to tell those debators to "adapt or perish." it's pretty simple. but, some of them really treat microstock like the black sheep of the herd. personally, i hope you make thousands per month. so, shoot me a link when you post that thread...i may not see it otherwise depending on where you post it.

by the way, istockphoto, shutterstock, or dreamstime have internal forums from what i understand. i signed up to shutterstock, i think, but never submitted any photos for acceptance. but, i read their forums, and they can give you some info, and critiques, on the photos you should be submitting. i would start there for stock discussions.

rock on, kent.

Thanks for youre comments chopper...

Yes, the whole debate about the dark side of micro stock is understandable. But thats how life is, technological developement change the society and the market. The discussion about micro stock is very equal to how the discussion went on other branches that was radicly changed becouse of new technology....Just think about all the people who have lost their work in AGFA or Kodak? Should we stop using digital camera becouse people loose their work? There is lots of things to watch out for, and stock photo is not a gold mine. But for me it is a way to get something out of pictures that are on my hardrive. My goal is to get enough money to buy me some new gear, starting with kenko tubes.

I think so to, the internal forums there are definently helpful. But at the same time, on those forum it is only those that are pro stock photo that are gathered. I guess to post a to critiqal post in the internal iStock forum, would probably be like posting a pro nikon thread in this forum. I think it could be another debate here... and probably learn other points of view.

Micro is not where I would like to start, I have actually found a German stock company, that allows me to post the picture elsewhere. And they have the same price sqedule as Getty, and I am allowed to delete my pictures any time. What made me choose them, was that I saw that my local newspaper used pictures from there. Afther 2 weeks I have around 200 visitors on my 74 pictures, so I hope that it will ends in a sale soon. This stock program is also linked with the internal picture net for newspapers in Germany.

Well, we are now off topic in this thread, so I guess any more discussions need to be done with PM...

LOL on that last one, mine too!
Yah indeed please do post a link on the thread you start on that, interesting matter if you ask me, I so agree btw that with technology developing you get movement towards a different way of people buying, so indeed they should just stop whining, not that I don't understand they feel bad about it, but oh well, that's just how it is and it always is hard to say goodbye to old ways and accept new ones.....

the thing i relate back to is my father. he runs a newspaper and has for going on 40 years. when he first took over for his late father, he had to fire the printer's union. they went to a "new" technology called off-set type. the printers were no longer needed because a machine could do what they did faster and more reliably. you think any of those guys shook his hand on the way out? heck no. in fact, his OWN father put off firing these guys because he knew what it would do to those families. so, he waited for the day my dad would take over so the young whipper-snapper could do the dirty work.

since then, my father has dealt with the internet crushing HIS business, walmart moving to town and refusing to advertise with "small, local papers," the car industry falling flat, and more technological things like big-box stores running out small town retail shops.....ALL of whom were major advertisers.

the world changes. he who cannot adapt perishes. the way it was, and always will be.

It will be difficult to joint the challenge this time... a local shop are letting costumers try out a camera for free.... So now I have to suffer with a 7D and a 15-85 untill saturday... :). This test week can be a very expensive one, but thanks to the tax government I have no money on my account. So it will be very difficult to convince my vife that a 7D and a new lens is a great investment.

Here is my first test shot with 15-85 (on my 400D, the battery on 7D arent charged yet). Had to find a way to really test out the IS, so I runned around in the shop with it. 1/6Sec and f8.0, ISO 100 on the shot. I think the IS did it well.. I have not sharpened this shot.

No problem Troy. Only pictures that are taken before the challenge starts will be disqualified.

It is up to those that vote to decide if it is fulfilling the task of this challenge or not. If someone want to give youre picture the vote, they have their right to do that. Welcome to the challenge!!!

And thanks for mentioning that the URL wasn't working. I have changed it now.

Congrats on the new 7D Will ! My Rebel was also the reason for all the excitement in Photography, but the 5D Mk2 which I bought a couple of months back has been keeping me busy too. I do check the competitions time and again but miss out on the voting.

yes it has somehow died.... mybe we need to change the concept a bit? Any good sugestion how to make it atract more? I like the challenge of having to take the picture in one week. But often I never manage to get a picture worth posting. I usually have pictures each week that are good, but not suited for the challenge..

I think this will help a lot. Shoot the challenge, even if it's one shot, and post it up. Let the community decide. Don't be so judgemental of your (collective "you) work.

Sometimes we are too picky, as if we can only submit the best because we have some "internet reputation" to protect. LOL.

Personally, summers are hard for me with kids home from school, a teacher for a wife, being the grass cutting/landscaping season, and possibly moving to a new home. Good luck finding time for photography.....well, uploading pics....with that on my plate. But, I'll be back when things slow down. I still follow along a little, but mostly to this thread for now.

Yah I just think it is mainly the fact it is vacation time, besides that I am 'homeless' at the moment, in the last stages of building a house, not necessarily a very relaxing time....living out of a suitcase, but I am trying to always post something.
I do not think changing the challenge will make it better, I think we just are going through a bit of downtime, I actually really did not like it when the challenge was 2 weeks.......but that could just be me of course.
Oh and @philk: you are welcome

Hopefully some of you will take advantage of the opportunity.

I don't usually have a chance, either, edmyloo. However, that isn't really what this challenge thread is about. It's more a do your best and make some friends thing. Besides, if you win, you have the added pressure of coming up with a cool topic.

I'm out, since I sold my XSi, but I'd love to see it revived. It's fun to check out others' work.

I'm trying to upgrade too! But everyone wants my XSi for like $200 and I'm not sure I can let it go for so cheap. x.x And yea, if we get started again, I'll participate!

I loved the Rebel Challenges, however, I have moved on to a 40d, so I don't qualify anymore :(

I'm in for a crop body challenge... I have a 60D now, and are enjoying it. I am not rich, but have been selling pictures through Flickr/Getty for a year now, and that has made it possible to buy new gear. Unfortunately the income is dropping alot, so my dream of buying a used 5dMKII is sinking.

I am also not selling my 400D, it is no longer worth selling. It has more than 100 000 cklicks and looks like it to. Lots of dust in the sensor, and some of the stickers etc is falling of. I even have som rust on the bajonett. But it is working. I am planing to buy an underwather House for it, and use it in the rough places.

Do you think 4 days would be enough? I left it at 6 so everybody has a chance even if they are out for some reason

Oh, I'm not sure. 4 sounds better to ME. But maybe 6 will work out for everyone else.
