This is the Official Discussion Thread for all of the Rebel Challenge competitions.
I will update this post every week with the current competition at the top of the list with submission dates.
Please keep all discussions of current comps to this thread, until after the submission deadline, so that we don't clutter up the submissions.
If you have any suggestions for making this competition better, or getting more involvement, please let me have em.

Hey Mullhawk, Is this your first baby on the way? Get some sleep now, because those days are coming to an end. :) I have 3 kids, so sleeping in is a luxury.
Let us know when you are a dad!
I have had a crazy work week so extending is good with me on the challenge, is 2 weeks too long?
mullhawk
1st of April 2009 (Wed), 22:06
Second child, the other is 5. I don't really sleep anyway, so I am not too worried about that :D
I think I changed it to wednesday of next week. If the others don't have a problem with it being longer I don't. I just don't want to loose what interest we do have in this...

I know I thought I had the perfect shot for this and it ended up blurry, I will try to get something after we get them home tomorrow. Also I can try to make a little more sense out of all of this, I haven't gone back and reread my first post but I know I made it early the other morning right before I went to the hospital, so bear with me another day or two, or it may be fine. Maybe I should scroll up huh?
I am going to need someone else to take over for this coming weeks comp. Maybe whoever is the winner can just post the new one up, or if someone else wants to do it? Friday will be my last day with internet, then I move on Saturday, and they aren't coming until Tuesday to hook me up at my new place.
Also I edited the first post, which I will do every week with the current competition. When I get back online next week I will update it with the new one
edit:oops, there my last few posts should all be fixed now, and if you didn't see them then this edit won't make any sense to you at all - Carry On... :D :D

Alright since I didn't get any kind of response, I am going to leave it up to you guys to wrap up this one, and start off a new challenge. I probably won't be back until Tuesday or Wednesday, unless the cable company comes early, but I definitely won't be here sunday or monday.

Alrighty, I'll be playing in #7. I have a car show to go to this weekend that has the chance for a not so huge crowd, but also some nice cars, so I should at least be able to get something.

Yeah, the nearest "country" around here only has trailers and 1980's corollas and accords. That doesn't sound like too engaging of a shot to me...

Dunno, earlier in this thread Mullhawk said he was moving house, would be off the air to around Wed, I am guessing that is another week? By then I will be gone too for an indertiminate time, not sure when I will be 'back'.

Yes, you can submit a photo GoinCC. Since we allowed a late entry last week, I would say go ahead and post one up if you have one ready ;).
Again my schedule has not allowed me much time for photography . Though I did drive 30 miles chasing a severe thunderstorm last Friday night only to finally catch it, set up my tri-pod and camera, and then watch the storm fizzle out!!!

Lol, only as an amature. I've chased storms in the past and this year I attended a few storm spotter training classes and I'm very glad I did. We are strongly encouraged to photograph and/or video tape these storms for educational purposes. So the XSi will be a very valuable tool for this ;).

I have a question for all of you.
it has been suggested to me that officially making these comps a little longer might make it better, since we have to take the shot during the time frame. I wasn't around for the car portrait, but was told it was three weeks, I know we have doen them for two weeks, and also a week and a half in the past.
So my question is to all of you
Do we want to extend them, and for how long should each one be, two weeks, three weeks, a month, please put a vote to it, this is everyone's competition, I just seem to be the thread maker?
Also should I extend the current one for another week or two?
kiwichris
12th of June 2009 (Fri), 05:43
I do think a week is long enough, if you were working to deadline commercially, eg newspaper, you would not be able to break that deadline, and personally, I think the pressure of the week deadline makes it quite an exciting exercise.

12th of June 2009 (Fri), 05:48
I am for a longer period of shooting and submitting, this because I believe that the quality of the photo's will be better (some are more like a quick snapshot(at least I have the feeling that my pictures are) ) and because i have a very busy schedule, I can make time but its easier if whe have more time to plan. But that's my opinion.

I feel your pain.. The worst part is I'm sitting in my office, looking at the window at the first bit of sun we've seen in about a week. The forecast shows more storms by 4PM.........

Nothing of Nature has been shining here for over a week here also, kinda getting sick of it. .
On the Deadline a week is more than enough time to compose a single photograph. I had less time to produce some projects in college and still managed.
mullhawk
12th of June 2009 (Fri), 17:14
so far two for keeping it at a week, and one for longer period
to me it doesn't matter, if I have a chance to take a shot and enter it I do, now that I am settled in a little better I plan to become a little more active, but maybe moving again in a few weeks.
I will wait to hear from more people and we will come to some sort of agreement, I just want the comp to stay alive : )

I usually use DPP so the exif data shows up on Flickr, however if you process in Photoshop, which I did because the horizon was slightly tilted and can not be corrected in DPP, 'save for the web' to produce a jpg also strips the exif and it will not show on flickr, which has happened with mine.
In that case if you open the pic in DPP, right click on the pic, choose 'info' right at the bottome of the pop up menu, you can then select manually, and copy and paste manually using keyboard shortcuts, which on the pc are ctrl 'C' then ctrl 'V'. I also had the 2 windows open, ie the thread I was posting in, and DPP.

I am going to try to get out tomorrow and do some shooting, my one day off in the past week and a half, and I have to work on some computers, I need the relaxation of just going out and taking some pictures, hopefully I will come across something that will fit this theme :D

It is amazing how often on my day off I have no time to do anything. For instance, this week, and every week this summer, I get a day off to watch my 11th month old girl while my wife does piano lessons.. I don't know how to get her out and go shooting lol
Hopefully I can still find sometime to go a shooting.. I also have a new lens coming hopefully by the end of the week.. kinda want to wait for that first lol.

22nd of June 2009 (Mon), 21:46
you need a baby backpack :D I take my 5 year old with me sometimes, I got him one of those Fisher Price kid digital cameras, the ones that can take anything, and we go out shooting. The thing takes horrible pics, I could have gotten him an 8mp pns for the same prce we paid for it, but it is extremely rugged, and he has fun with it.
I havn't tried taking the 3 month old out shooting yet...
I also used to get the watch the kid while the wife gives piano lessons, but since we moved she hasn't found any new students yet.

I am glad mullhawk that you understand the life of a piano lesson husband :) stinks about the no new students thing though. Most of my wife's students came from the church we attend.
And very nice for the first two

yeah, it takes some getting used to, but it is a little extra dough, she also was the music directer and organist/pianist at a church where we used to live. She just now found a new pianist job at a church here. So it keeps her busy.
still trying to get off my butt and get the work that needs done, done, so I can try to take some pics today...

Maybe now is not the time, but possibly after, can I get a few thoughts on the processing of my entry? I am just being reintroduced to PS after years away from the program, so I don't know how to do much of what I would like to do. I didn't know how to vignette or frame so I just burnt one on, and I don't know what I think about it yet lol.

yup, summer's here for sure. winter and spring drug on and on, which was nice, but summer came in this week and baked us like august. i was also surprised to see so many "tourists" shooting the arch today. i've lived here 20 years and never seen so many cameras......and sweating people. 8th day in a row over 90, which is rare for us, and its expected to continue until at least saturday. yikes!

Hmm. I am off to NYC for the weekend which has a lot of potential for this challenge, but I wasn't planning on taking my laptop, so I won't be able to post till after the cut off date. Oh well, I think I will shoot any way and if I get something good I will post "out of competition"

didnt want to sound like an egocentric yank in this one. but, i was dying to get the colors in there since that is all i will be seeing over here for a week. and, i felt, even though it isnt the "time of year" for the rest, those colors dominate most other countries' flags.....at least a lot of them. and, the majority of the guys/gals i see posting in here are from countries that use r/w/b as their colors, too.
so, have at it. and, yes, pink can count as "red" since we will be seeing lots of fireworks.

well one of them was pulled (edit: I guess it wasn't actually pulled out of the thread, but he did use a different photo as his submission, maybe he can go and delete the first photo, as to not create confusion, there is only one photo submission per person) and switched, and the other in my opinion only really has one color hue to it, as far as I can see anyway, to me they both looked to fit the monochrome bill. And I think that if you take a photo that you like and is what you interpret to fit then post it and let the judging be the deciding factor.
If you don't think a particular photo meets the guidelines of the comp then vote for a different one.
It's the best way I can think to settle it, but it's not up to me, I am just throwing it out there, if someone else thinks differently then speak up.

I don't see any images that I think should be disqualified, some push the envelope, but I since I didn't get supper specific in the rules, I don't see any problem - it's not like there is any money at stake. As Mullhawk said if you don't think an image is a good match for the challenge title don't vote for it.
I would encourage Scorpio to remove one of his images just to simplify voting - I don't think it is fair to have two images in the running.
I am glad to see so many strong entries - even from the folks in the middle of winter!

So question for all to consider...
I enjoy the judging process where everyone gets a chance to throw in their two cents, but I also don't like waiting around 3 or 4 days to make sure every vote gets in. (Obviously patience is not a virtue in my book...). Was wondering if it would be worthwhile to revisit how each week is judged? Would it be better to go into a DSLR Speed Challenge model where the winner from last week picks the new topic and then picks the winner?
Just wondering.
Though I am excited about this weeks theme.. no clue how it will work, but excited none the less

For me, that doesn't give the unanimous winner (or i would say the best winner). If the last week's winner will pick the winner this week... some may have a doubt. <-- just my opinion though.
as for the voting process... maybe mullhawk would want to talk about that? But, i really like the way it is right now. Some members don't log-in everyday.
mullhawk
26th of July 2009 (Sun), 23:52
I like the voting, because we all see things differently, and what one person thinks is great, another might not like at all, With voting we all have a say in who wins, and like DYORD said it should be a unanimous winner, in my opinion. I also feel that this isn't meant to be a quicky comp, in the way it is set up, having to go out and shoot the pic the week of the theme. So why rush the voting? give everyone a chance to voice their opinion. Though if the majority wants to go to one person voting then we can do that...
As for this weeks, I have a couple ideas that might actually be good enough to get some sort of recognition, hopefully I can get out and shoot tomorrow...

Unanimous winner? In that case get a single judge and have the proviso "Judges decision is final, no correspondance entered into" in this case posts of course.
Why do the newcomers want to mess with something that has been working relatively smoothly for the last 6 months? Is this some sort of takeover bid?

I like the timeframe for this group although time to process and submit AFTER the dead line would be appreciated. I prefer the way this comp has gone because I can fit it in with my lifestyle.
Although with the last few weeks the time frame has been cut short I'd still prefer the challenge to stretch over 1 1/2 weeks and restarting every 2 weeks. Enthusiasm is great but the comp will run itself into the ground.
kiwichris
27th of July 2009 (Mon), 06:43
Al, due to the fact we are a day ahead on the timeline, we actually have a day less to post our submission, unless we change our cameras to American time, so the dates are correct in the exif. I agree, our exif should be allowed one day over the time the comp closes for submissions, just to put us on a level footing.

I'm not sure about the timeframe.. but from what understand, submissions end on a Sunday, voting starts on a Monday until Friday that week, then another theme on a Sunday.
Can anyone correct me on this?

Well, not really. When we started we where anouncing Monday to Sunday 2-3 days before it started so everyone was enjoying the same amount of time regardless of timezone.
Someone made the comment that they were on the east coast of the US so that's that, 'Let's vote' which goes to show some level of ignorance we're up against.
mullhawk
27th of July 2009 (Mon), 09:32
this is why I put for it to start and end on those times est, so it just takes a little math to figure out each particular time zones posting times. that just means that your photos may be taken and posted sat. through friday, or monday through sunday. I know it gets a little confusing, but there is really no way to put one end time and it be the exact same day and time for everyone.
I personally am very happy with the way the whole thing is running, and moving along. It is really about honing your skills as a photographer, not only taking pics, but criticizing and voting on others, and about having fun, I did what I could to try to keep this thing afloat because I thought it was a lot of fun, and really liked the way it is set up...

I wasn't trying to screw up what you guys had been doing, I was just curious as to the possibility of speeding up the voting process. That is probably less of the newcomer trying to take over as the 24 year old's impatience streak rearing its ugly head.

Even though I haven't been as active in this comp lately as I would like to be, I still would prefer to see it ran like it has been all along. Like previously stated, it wasn't mean't to be a quicky competition. And unless an obvious winner is apparent, then 5 days to vote is fair. Plus it allows us time to persue other photographic opportunities. Participation is picking up here, so if it's not broke, don't fix it...Just my 2 cents.

In reality I have no complaints, and also like it the way it is, giving time to vote gives folk time to look, digest, think and choose.
After all, if one wants to play at anything, one has to obey the rules, which can mean life becomes a little more challenging. Playing means, you accept the challenge.

haha, thats funny, my other entry was color, but I wasn't happy enough with it, so I will show it to you here, This is one side of a church I actually went to shoot the other side for this theme, but it was a ****ty day and in a very questionable neighborhood, and none of my shots came out right. Mostly too many telephone wires completely ruining them, I do have one more angle I want to go back and try. But anyway as we were pulling away I looked back and saw this, and said to my wife, what screams more fear then a day care sign on that building, so I shot it from out the window of the car. She was driving in case we needed to get the hell out of there, like I said questionable neighborhood...

i came home and a friend that used to live there told me stories of how aggressive the thugs can be, and told me to be glad i was there during the day. (although, that would be one hell of a building at night....very pretty) basically, it made me wonder if i got lucky during the 3 night shots i DID take? hmmmm.

I live in the Pittsburgh Area, I am right across the river from the area that this is in, my neighborhood is really nice, but I have to drive through this neighborhood to go to work. It is ok when you stay on the main streets, but like where this was at, I could see from the main street, but had to venture into the side streets to get it.
It's not like south central LA, but I wouldn't be surprised to get my gear stolen, or worse, there is a lot of drugs and violence around there, and while I was taking the other side I noticed a couple of guys lookin my way from an alley... I didn't hang around too long, but I will go back :D
Me and some guys got lost walking through chicago one time, we ended up in a very questionable looking area, we made it about a block down and saw some things we didn't even want to walk past, and turned around and just went back the way we came. a few weeks later I saw that same street on a show called Gangland, they were talking about it being one of the worst gang violence areas in the country, and about how bad it is, I was glad we didn't keep venturing that way...
