Dpreview reviewed a Nikon mount Tamron 10-24. They said it compared favorably to the Sigma 10-20.

Just a couple of more shots. Like anything you just have to play with this lens and get to know it's limitations but I love to take this lens with me as it has not failed to make me laugh at a shot I have taken.

I got my Tammy today. But like all my other (ultra) wide angle lenses I have problems to focus to infinity. The focus goes not higher than 3-9ft. My camera was already to the service and they said "af-system is perfect calibrated". I know in wide angle the hyperfocal distance is not that big, so everthing from 9ft or so should be sharp, but not if the lens don't sets the distance to more than 9ft.
If you watch the first two pictures you see that always the foreground is sharp. I only used the center af-field. On the second picture I find the lens very sharp for wide open (even tough the focus isn't there where I wanted).
The battery test shows no front- or backfocus. So the XSi seems to have problems with wide angle lenses. To bad, maybe I should buy a 40D or 50D to get a better focus system.

And the viewing angle is amazing (in the first image, I didn't lift up the camera, I still watched through the view finder). But the corners are very soft wide open, but the center is very sharp wide open.

I just purchased this lens yesterday and am hoping the weather will cooperate tommorrow and let me get out and capture a few with it. If i get out i will post what i come up with. Awsome pics by the way lens is light weight but images i took at store were super crisp out to the edge and no real bad distortion so hopefully another good tammy lens.

Here's a quick on I snapped this morning.

Converted to jpeg, otherwise not much done to this pic besides a slight contrast boost. I'll post more as a get a chance to pay with the lens a bit more!

I have this lens but I haven't gotten a chance to use it much. it does seem to have a lot of distortion on the edges, but maybe that's normal for most UWA lenses. i also don't have any other experience with other UW

Seems like a nice enough lens, I like the focal length range, but to me, the colours don't look as VIBRANT or as BRIGHT as I've seen from pics taken with either the Canon 10-22, the Sigma 10-20, or the Tokina 11-16 or 12-24 lenses. Maybe it's just the subject matter/lighting conditions, but the colours seem rather DULL. Of course this is JMHO.

Just got this lens last week. It's a bit soft around the edges, but I don't think that really effects the final result as long as the eyes are drawn to the center.

Yeah, those colours seem a lot brighter than most of the other photos I've seen taken with this lens. As I suggested in my previous reply, it must have been the lighting/shooting conditions. Thanks for posting.

I originally bought this lens to get pictures for work. (granite countertops) and need the wide angle to get entire kitchens in with limited space.
Turns out this lens is a lot of fun outside and I am using far more than the 2 kit lenses that came with my T1i.
The Hoya HD Circular Polarizer really helps for both contrast outside and taking reflections out of granite.

how do all the users of this lens find the AF on this lens? fast, slow? noisy, quiet?

why is this lens so "un-popular"? I mean 10-24 FL with a F3.5-4.5 is not bad at all.

in my limited experience it is not super fast, but not so slow that it bothers me. Then again I have not shot anything that is moving yet. I don't notice the noise.
It seems pretty sharp to me, I am happy with it.

the AF is decent enough. does it really matter though? it's not like you will be taking many action shots with this lens.. as far as noise, i can't remember it giving any noise. and it is pretty sharp, i have no used any other ultra wide angle lenses so it is kind of hard for me to compare, but it is a good lens.

Older post but maybe someelse will see this, I'm not a happy Tammy user...way to soft for my taste, does not focus well with either my 40D and now my 50D. Had the 40 calibrated by Canon and no issues, the 50 is new so shouldn't be an issue. Maybe I got a lemon.

Hi, I'm new here. Just looking into this lens myself.

I have a similar setup to masterFX with a 450D, 18-55 and 70-300 canon lenses and now looking for something wide.

Just thought I would say that some of the shots look great and I guess a lot of it is down to experience both with cameras and lenses?

I'm pretty amateur, but looking forward to some experimentation!

Thanks,

Will

The travel on this lens is rather short, so the slow motor is not really a factor for me anyway. I also find that this lens focuses pretty well in low light.

Will I have had this lens since Nov 09. I like the perspective of 10mm. The only real limitations I see in this lens are aperture, wishing for 2.8, the corners are a bit soft, but not usually a problem. For the money this lens is very good value. I enjoy getting in close with the 10mm and discovering what I can do with it. In fact, I rarely use the 24mm end! Also Chromatic Aberation(fringing), Lens Flare, and distortion are very well controlled for a lens in this focal range. My guess is you would probably enjoy this lens if you tried it.

^^ very nice , I'm just looking into getting an UWA lens right now . The only thing I do notice with some (not all ) is a fair bit of barrel distortion . I like the fact it doesn't mind the sun so flares will not be an issue . I guess you have to live with some imperfections as there is no such thing as a perfect lens ;)

rodleviton
18th of September 2010 (Sat), 15:20
Ya, there is barrel distortion but this is common with all lenses in this category and I believe the Sigma 10-20 is even more pronounced BUT this can be corrected in post processing. This is my first time using this kind of lens and these are my very first shots so I've got a lot to learn when using a UWA lens.

I just couldn't justify the cost of both the Sigma and the Canon UWA's here in Eastern Europe as they are almost double the cost of the Tamron. The DP review actually rated the Tamrons center sharpness better than the Sigma and the Sigma's distortion worse than the Tamron so I think I made a good choice.

I've invested about $20 to rent a Canon EF-S 10-22 for a day and do a head-to-head comparison with my Tamron 10-24. For all tests: Tripod and wireless remote used. 7D @ ISO100. Camera set to manual mode. WB: sunlight. Filters removed (seen in the test pictures). No hoods used. I also made sure the lenses were clean. I took many test shots but I think these are good representatives (since using natural sunlight for tests can have an effect on results).

Thanks for those test shots Coirchild. The Canon is clearly sharper and has less CA at the edges than the Tamron at f3.5. The Tamron controls flare much better than the Canon. The Canon appears to be 1/2 stop darker exposure than the Tamron. Could this be related to the Camera settings? Camera settings specific to Canon lens may have something to do with this.
It is my own experience that the Tamron is quite sharper at 10mm in the corners at f5.6. I suspect you would have a much closer result @ a smaller aperture. As for th CA, that could be an issue even at smaller apertures.

Overall, I enjoy using my Tamron, I know its limits, and if I stay within them the results are quite pleasing. If I had it to do over, and about $200.00 more to put into it, I would buy the Canon.

Thanks for the comparison - corner sharpness is definitely noticable. Can you do the Tamron vs the Sigma 10-20 next??

Can you do the Tamron vs the Sigma 10-20 next??

I've never considered comparing this lens to the Sigma, probably because I don't know of any local photo rental places that have the Sigma 10-20 in stock. I'd be interested in seeing how all these UWA lenses for APS-C cameras compare to each other (including things like the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, and other Sigma UWAs).

I don't think I'll do any more testing with my Tamron, but I'm sure many tests have been done with 3rd party UWA lenses and the Canon 10-22.

Camera settings specific to Canon lens may have something to do with this.
It is my own experience that the Tamron is quite sharper at 10mm in the corners at f5.6. I suspect you would have a much closer result @ a smaller aperture. As for th CA, that could be an issue even at smaller apertures.

As recent image contributors have demonstrated, the 10-24 is a very capable lens. It gets to 10mm just like the Canon does, but yes, it does have it's limitations. The Tamron definitely gets sharper as the aperture gets smaller, but in my opinion a good lens should be sharp at it's maximum aperture and it's specialty focal lengths. I also would go for the Canon if I could do it over again.

I'm currently trying to upload more test photos onto my Flickr account, but for the second time Flickr froze while uploading. I'll try to remember to upload them later (it's past my bedtime), since they show things that my current uploads don't show or don't show very well (distortion, CA, f/10 corner crop, and aperture 6.3). In these test photos the Tamron seems to perform pretty well against the Canon.

Yeah, I looked through this entire thread to see if I had already posted some of them in here, but not a single post in here untill today. Oh well!

Yeah, it's a really decent lens for not a huge amount of money. Used properly it can deliever some cool images.

I was really happy with that basketball shot from last season. I think it came out well. UWA lenses are not usually used as a sports lens, but it worked for that shot.

Two shots from my first shoot with my new Tammy. I must say I had been a tad wary about this lens, following the initial blasting it received after its launch. It more than exceeded my expectations and proves that reviews can often be misleading and opinionated.

The previous Tamron UWA 11-18mm got some bad rap because both Sigma and Tokina brought out lenses that just performed better, were faster than the Tamron and even cheaper, so Tamron dropped the ball.

Then Tamron came back with the 10-24 which was not really rated because most folks already picked up either the Tokina or Sigma. But if you rate the new Tamron against those it fairs very well in terms of quality, speed and price.

Basically there are more reviews and ratings for the other brands, hence the Tamron kinda slips under the radar but in my opinion it's a sweet lens :)

Nice...I know this lens gets little respect, but I like using mine with my 50D. I just picked up a 5D and took a couple of test shots with it. It's usable down to about 14mm, then the vignetting sets in. At 14~15mm on a full frame we are talking about W-I-D-E. I'll try to post some shots this weekend if the weather cooperates.

While breaking into IR filters and whatnot, I discovered that my 10-24mm has gained the magical ability to shoot at f/4, even at 24mm. Hopefully this magic doesn't have any adverse effects.

In the meantime, here's one of the 'better' IR shots so far. :)

I'm definitely thinking of adding one of these lenses to my kit, but I am a bit concerned looking at the images taken with the 450d's, they just don't seem altogether sharp from most aspects and as I myself have a 400d I don't want to fork out for a lens that wont give results I can be happy with, can anyone help to calm my worries? Or should I just look for another wide angle?

Hi Pete, I use this lens with my T1i/500D and it's a great lens. Don't get it mixed up with the Tammy 11-18mm which got a bad rap compared to the Tokina and Sigma UWA's at that time. Then Tamron released this guy and it actually got good reviews and is even said to be sharper than the Sigma equivalent...I say this guy is an underrated keeper.

This lens is definitely underrated. I absolutely love it. This and the 28-75mm are making me into a bit of a Tamron fanboy, I hope there's a 70-200mm in my future...

Here's a good slew of things from this underdog!

Brilliant, that makes me feel better, thanks Rod, looks like I can go for it then!

anyone tried this on a full frame camera via a 1.4 TC? I know it's doable w/o the TC at around 15~16mm from what I've seen in the flickr pool... But yeah, I wonder if it can be used at 10mm via the TC for 14mm effective? And FYI I've done just that with both sigma 10-20s and the canon 10-22. They all work but have issues, I'm wondering if this is any different. ;)

One question I have is will it accept UV filters or is the front element sticking too far out? I am buying it used and it didnt have the hood, so I wanted to stick something there for protection.

Master of Defenestration
8th of February 2012 (Wed), 09:18
Yeah. They fit. Not sure if it'll be in frame at 10mm though (haven't mounted a filter on my lens yet)...But the element doesn't hit it.

Thank you sir! Yeah I guess that is a major issue when being down at 10. I found the hood brand new today for 18 dollars, so its probably cheaper than a good 77mm UV filter anyway!

Well, you can walk right up to, and on that bridge from the south end. Nothing but construction tape to stop you. I went around noon on a week day and there wasn't a soul around. Might make for a better picture now that the cranes are off the tower and most of the glass is now in place.
