This is a photo of me taken Nov. 1965. Uncle Sam & I had an arrangement where I would work for him for a few years for very little pay & a promise to send me somewhere interesting for awhile. South East Asia sounded good.....Whoa!!! Wait a minute!!!........ Vietnam!!!http://photocamel.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif

This was a cool day - Only 105 deg. - you could actually touch the jeep without making blisters.

I have a few more images if anyone is interested in seeing them................tw

I find double value to them, not only the human subject factor, but also the fact that you were there taking the actual photos. I would love to see more.

Wow! Looks like you were Army. I was in 'Nam '65-'66 with the Corps. Landed in Chu-Lai and then made my way up to the Danang area.

I have a bezillion pics that I took with I think it was a Pentax or Olympus. Anyway it was split, well crap, I'm not sure what they called it. I could take two images on one frame.

I got some great pics, but I screwed up and let the Vietnamese develop them. Most of the pics came out blurry or unclear. I still have a passel of them somewhere.

Those are some great shots.

I spent most of my time near Qui Nhon & got to go into town a lot. this is where most of my photos of people came from.

I had quite a few images ruined the same way. That's when I started shooting Ektachrome slides & processed them when I returned to the states. I could only get 4 or 5 rolls so I didn't do as many photos as I would have liked. Thanks for the kind words.

The first is a typical side street shopping scene. Get a load of the pith helmet the US Army Engineer is wearing. They were cool but hard to keep on.

The second is a young street vendor. Is that a type of French bread we see?

I loved that movie too. It did a pretty good job of representing the politics of that era. I almost didn't make it home. Now that's quite something. True knowledge of what to do, in any given situation, with a camera.

Thanks for your service, and thanks for sharing your 'world' and your point of view. Many people take things for granted, but, this is just another facet in time where things, as bad as they were, show the righteous side of humanity. So, thanks again for sharing them, developing them, and taking 'this side' of imagery.

Ockie; I used a Minolta SR-7 (which preceded the SRT-101) and Ektachrome 64 slide film. The built in meter was broken so I used the Sunny 16 rule for exposure calculations plus a little educated guess work here & there. If you check the history of Minolta, you'll find that this was the first 35mm SLR they made with a built in meter............tw

I was given a brief opportunity to see that part of the world thru something other than the gun sights of an M14 (not M16) & I did the best I could with very little film at my disposal.

I am totally amazed (and pleased) that people find these photos as interesting as I do. They bring back nice memories for me every time I look at them. I must confess that I do have a few memory gaps from that tour which makes me wonder what I'm missing.

These are very interesting. The colors and the warmth of the images just seem to "work" for me. I'm sure part of it is the nature of slide film.

Many of the the scenes could have been photographed many years earlier, or perhaps several years later, so there is a certain timelessness to them. A nice perspective on another culture.

Slide film is part of the quality you see. The rest is the fact that I do not use a flat bed scanner to digitize slides. I use a digital camera on a heavy copy stand & a homemade light box. It's almost like taking a scene live.

Someone back there, said that this should be given the thread of the year award in the travel areas, or something along those lines. I've become a bit of a believer that the glowing praise is being thrown around far too easily in general on the forum, but for once, I totally, totally agree.

These are simple, but timeless and achingly interesting. Greater somehow in the context they were taken in obviously, but still very cool photos on their own. In the age of information overload I find it difficult to feel blown away by threads or articles very easily, but seriously, this was a major highlight. Thank you. :)

Unfortunately, Ruth, I have no more that I will show from Vietnam. Many of my domestic images were destroyed by PX processing. The remainder of my images from that time period are not appropriate for any forum......................tw

Thank you.

What he said.

Great stuff. Thanks, from a child of the 60's.

I also would vote for this for the best of the year award. You made a comment pages ago about not remembering the whole tour. Maybe that is a blessing? I am glad you have the ability to remember and share the good times. Seams that alot of the press of the U.S., shall i say, "Enjoys" sharing the bad stuff yet never gives us the good side. I enjoyed these shots. I love the film and the quality. I was born in 67 and cant remember the "conflict". Thanks for allowing me to see it as you did. Again Thanks for my freedom.

i wonder where those kids are now.

I worked for Vietnam Airlines from 1993 to 1996. Maybe I worked with some of those kids. :D

Vietnam is a wonderful place to visit, or to live and work. The people are warm and friendly to all foreigners.

I have often wondered what has happened to those that I photographed there. I found the Vietnamese people to be wonderfully open & friendly & only wish the situation were different when I was there.

This might be of interest to some viewers of this thread.....

In the movie Good Morning Vietnam There was a young kid (Tuan) that was suspected of being VC. His real name is Tung Thanh Tran and is Now living in Illinois, USA. He escaped from there in the late '70's.

I met him on another photo forum that he frequents & he was very pleased to see some of my peaceful Vietnam photos from before he was born. He said that his parents are from just a few miles north of Qui Nhon.............tw

You're welcome & thanks for looking.

I stored the original slides in Kodak Carousel trays. Perhaps that helped them retain their color better. I did very little to no color enhancement when digitizing them.

Old images retain their reality when the reproduction quality is good. I have 12 gold toned contact prints from Matthew Brady's (original glass plate negative) collection of famous people. The realism in those prints is simply amazing...............tw

Did you see my post #100 in this thread? This is a very interesting gentleman & a pretty good photographer too.

Prior to the war, most non-Asians didn't know that Vietnam even existed. If you have access to National Geographic magazines or the CD set, you will find more in the issues: Oct 1950, Apr 1951, Sep 1952, Jun 1955. This would be pre-official US involvement in that area.

Exellent series, that last capture is pure class. I sat looking at that one for a while, you can't help but wonder what the child was thinking at that moment as he stares across the water. I also wonder what happened to him, where is he now etc etc..

Pictures like that almost ask more questions than they answer...

Also strange to think that assuming that child is about 3 at a guess that would make him 10 years older than me..

Thankyou for sharing.....

That's a good point - it's incredible how the quality of the slides are preserved. I did an art history internship in the slide library in college (100,000+ slides), and I had to re-shoot slides that had turned pink over the years. Grueling work, I used a copy stand with a film SLR, and four extremely bright and hot lights. I was a sweaty mess at the end of the day.

I can relate to the grueling work involved. A few years ago, as a (non court ordered) ;) community service, I digitized all the local landmark images for our Historical Society. That took about 18 months, but, it was well worth it because most of them were crumbling. I have a polarized light electronic flash setup for that so, there was no heat problem.
