I was walking up a steep grassy hill this weekend and I slipped. My camera with my 580EXii attached was hanging around my neck, it didn't hit the ground but it did hit my chest and now the flash falls to the left.

So I guess the stronger metal hotshoe doesn't go any farther inside the flash then what you can see.

I dropped it off at the Canon Irvine Service Center on Monday, it's only 2 months old so it's under warranty. They said it could take up to 7 business days... We'll see what happens.

If you drop or break things it's not a warranty repair. The hotshoe isn't hard to replace yourself, but the 580ii hotshoe costs about $50 from memory.

They said it was covered under warranty, so it's free. And it's not the actual hot shoe, it's inside the flash. I replaced the hotshoe on my 430EX myself in 5 minutes for $10 or so.

Consider yourself lucky, then, because Tim's right about the Canon warranty... ;)

Well I didn't tell them I fell!

That's exactly what I would've done.

It's ready to pick-up! Monday night through Thursday, I guess that would be 3 days!
