I'm looking to use some time lapse footage for some video work.
I could record my own or use some creative commons footage online somewhere if the footage is long enough(3-5 minutes).
I'm wondering how rough doing time lapse recording is on a camera? I'm looking at around 6000 non-stop frames per video... I'm not sure if it could be harmful to my treasured 40D over time. Any time lapsers out there?

I've fooled around with it. It is wear and tear on your camera just like any other shooting. I have the remote, the model # is in my signature, which lets you control everything from number of frames, time between frames, etc. It's a very nice addition to have.

A friend of mine has taken over 30,000 pictures on his 40D due to time lapse photography. Like any camera, it will eventually wear out the shutter. Don't be afraid of using your gear how you want to, when you want to. ;)

Yeah, I have the TC-80N3 and look forward to using it.
That site is interesting but I think the videos at http://www.openfootage.net/ is more the style I'm looking for with what I've found so far.

Bringing this to the top for a question that I am trying to figure out. I want to do some time lapse photography but when I read the instructions for the timer, you can only go up to 99 frames. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around this???

Which timer do you have?
I've never tried to do more than 99 with my timer.
I'm pretty sure you can take X number of shots in groups.
So 2 groups of 99 would give you 198 shots.
If the time between groups of shots were minimal, it would be nearly continuous.
I'll check my timer later when I have time.

Patrick, I have the TC-80N3. If there was a way to do groups of 99 shots, that would be great but I am not seeing it.
I am looking to do Time Lapse with 5+ minutes at 1 second intervals. I guess I play around with it some more and read through the instructions again. I see some videos where people use the TC timer with thousands of shots so that is why I am trying to figure out how to get more than 99 shots.
Any advice from some of those using this would be helpful too.
Thanks

I have the timer and I just set a time (for instance, 5 min) and it will take a single photo every 5 minutes indefinately (at least that's what I believe)

Ive actually purchased one like this> http://cgi.ebay.com/LCD-Timer-Remote-control-for-Canon-50D-40D-5D-TC-80N3_W0QQitemZ400033125908QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamer a_Camcorder_Remotes?hash=item5d23d51614&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A15%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7 C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50
That seems to work well and take up to 399 photos in one session.

I found the answer. It was buried in a foot note on the bottom of two different pages in the manual. From page 32 on setting the exposure count, " If the number of exposures is set to 00, the number of frames shot will be unlimited" Basically, it is saying, the # of exposures will only be limited by the amount of memory you have in your camera(or if your camera battery dies first).
gonna have to try it soon... WEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!:D
