Extremly new to digital photography and just bought the Rebel XT.

Only question is, I set the iso to 1600 and shot with flash at a slower shutter by mistake can all that light effect the CCD chip and harm it from over exposure?

Just wondering if the chip has any protection from extreme light?

the only time you can damage the chip from light would possibly be from direct sunlight from a long exposure of many seconds (damage caused from overheating), Other than that its the sensors job to take light and convert it to an electrical value. if its too much light you will just clip the sensors and they will just output thier max values and the image would be perfectly white.

In my experience the best way to work with a flash is in manual mode. Set the shutter speed of around 1/80th, the aperture to suit you, and the ISO maybe around 400 (try it and see). If you use a slower shutter speed to take pics of people you'll get a blurred pic - I worked that out the hard way.
