If I were to take portrate photos outdoors and indoors.....is it a requirement to get an external (hot shoe mounted)flash and if so what would you recommend?
Also can you go wrong getting a second hand one?

In short, the answer is Yes. The on camera flash is really just for emergencies. It isn't very strong and its closeness to the lens produces Red Eye. If you are on a budget, go with the Canon 420EX or the Sigma 500 DG Super. To help you get more answers, I am moving this to the lighting section. You will find the much of the information you need in the Sticky.

You don't mention what kind of camera you own, a camera with a hot shoe or a P/S without one.
If you have a hotshoe, be sure to get a CANON flash.
If you have a P/S go to B&H Photo website and look at Canon and Metz slave flashes made for P/S cameras.

Fred I have,
Canon 350D, 55-200 usm II, 2x teleplus MC7, 18-55 efs, ef 50 f/1.8 II.
Could I go wrong getting a used flash? Anything to look out for if I did?.
In australia it costs around $700 new for a top end Canon flash.

Anything electronic can have bugs. I wouldn't touch a used one that didn't allow you to have it checked out by a repair shop first or that came with a store warranty.
