First of, I'm a newbie to photography, just found this site a few days ago, great place. I purchased a XT kit about 3 weeks ago, have been doing some occasional shooting of my kids, haven't really gotten into it for I've been extremely busy. Anyhow, last night I was shooting more pics of my kids, when all of a sudden the camera stopped shooting. Everything seemed to work, except the shutter. It would focus on half way, but pushing it fully did NOT do a darn thing. Didn't see any Err on the screen, powering off didn't do a darn thing, everything was still on. Seemed like it froze, however it wasn't really, I was still able to focus on different things, switching modes worked, but just the shutter stuck. I had to remove the battery, and restart it for everything to clear. This happened a few times last night. Any one else have had a similar experience? Time to take the camera back?

The 20D had a similar problem just after it was introduced. When the battery was removed and re-installed the camera performed normally. The problem was essentially eliminated with a firmware upgrade. This is the first such issue I have heard about with the new Rebel XT.

Take a look at the forums on dpreview web site... there's a lot of stuff about your camera there.

At that moment when it froze, tell us exactly what was visible through the viewfinder. For example, shutter, aperture, or any flashing icons. You may find the flashing icons are key clues.

I can't recall what was visible through the viewfinder, however I know there were no flashing icons. I was looking for one, flashing icons, err, to tell me something, but no ... nothing.

And this firmware, where can I get it from?

I did something similar when I first got my 350D, first day. Hit the shutter release nothing seemed to happen, 10 seconds later the camera took the shot, I had managed to knock the camera onto selftimer. Only design flaw so far - why put the single/continuous/timer button right under the thunbs resting place?

If it is a Canon firmware upgrade that you are seeking, then look first to the Canon web site. Exactly which site depends on your location.

I personally find the design of the XT most excellent rufus.

After using my D300 for a year and half, and having many people take pictures
of me and my family with it (that have never used the camera before) I have to say
that I am so so so happy that Canon moved that button. Now I do not have to
explain how to use the camera at all. About 33% of people that I would hand the
camera to would hit that mode change/timer button instead of the shutter release.

The XT rocks. I just love it. It is so fast. My wife loved the Rebel 300D so much that
I DID NOT HAVE TO BEG AT ALL to get the XT as soon as it was announced. Now I
have TWO excellent digital SLRs. Now my wife and I get to argue over the 75-300mm IS USM instead.

FIRST POST!

Jeff,

welcome to the forum :D
Now be a good husband and give that 75-300 lens to your wife ... then you can go out and get a 70-200/4.0 L

Best regards,
Andy
