is there a way to check the optical zoom?
i have an SX100IS and it seems to me that the optical zoom is lower than 10X.

Take a picture of something like a yardstick filling the frame at the camera's widest setting and again, without moving the camera, at its maximum telephoto. You should see 1/10 of the markings at tele. compared to wide.
