I lived in Manama in the early 90's - it's not so much a desert. They have several interesting fishing villages, many character's at the Bab el-Bahrain souk, and of course the "tree of life" could make a nice capture with some effort (like most landscapes, arriving just before dawn and near sunset will be best).
Good luck!

thanks for that. I will be staying in Manama. the desert was a bit of an exageration, altho will be going for BBQ's. will try the fishing villages, have been in the souk once before. the colours of the spices are amazing so will try there as long as the characters dont mind.

Hi Randy
were there any restrictions on who/what you can photograph when you were over in Bahrain?

When I was there (and places like the UAE), there were no specific restrictions made known to me. But after 5 years of war in the area, no idea how hospitable locals still are...:?. I'm certain you'll have a wonderful time though, lots of nightlife, mango drinks, and amazing barber services.
