I volunteered to shot pet pictures for a fund rasier and the plan is to shot and print the picture then and there... I would like to hook my D20 or my 40D up to a labtop so I wont have to keep taking my card out and in.. Could someone tell me what I would need to do in order for the file to go PC and not the card?
Thanks,
William

It's quite easy to do tethered shooting with the 40D and the right software, which you have. It's the EOS Utility that came with the camera. So you have everything you need (apart from the USB lead).

It didn't take you long to find your software!
I'm not sure what version mine is but I see you've got a 40D (as have I) and I'm sure that the software that came with it is suitable. If not, you can download the latest version from the web.
The easiest way to find out is to load the software you have.

Open the Utilities program and click the Preferences box at the bottom of the main window. Then click on 'remote shooting' and make sure the 'also save to CF card' is unticked. Then got to Destination Folder and select where you want to download the images to. Hope this helps. My 5D also requires me to go to the Communication setting in the main menu of my camera and set it to PC. I've not used either of your cameras, so not sure whether any of this is helpful!

I am also interested in this thread for the same purposes. I have a question though. Is it possible to have multiple cameras directly saving to the computer/laptop simultaneously? Will the Canon software handle that?

Doesn't the 40D have the much-maligned "pict-bridge" feature? Just shoot to the card and hook the camera to the printer.
A quick check of the manual says, look on page 133 for instructions on how to use this feature.
