To me there isn't anything wrong with the back ground. That shot came out nice.

Yea, I actually wouldn't touch the background if I were you. I think it matches his expression. Plus, it's all incredibly out of focus anyway. If it were a color picture, I'd def change the background, but for a black and white that is perfect. Lots of depth, and it's not distracting. I think a persons eye should be focused on the guy, not what's behind the guy. I hate it when people take picture of their kids and stuff with these incredibly elaborate backgrounds. The photo should be about the person. Ya know?

Yeah, background looks fine. The exposure looks good everywhere but a little overexposed on the face. Maybe you should try to do something to darken the burnt out areas mainly around his nose and right cheek/forehead.

How about this?
Mask B/G with soft brush
Guass blur 5-15
add noise 5-10
curves minus shadow 5-10
convert to grayscale

hey amn i liek the grittiness of the first shot. yeah its not a sunny happy beach kinda feel, but it seems to really fit his personality for soem reason. i wouldnt touch the background, and i kinda think the retouch is too dark, maybe somehwhere in between though, might need to tone it down a tad, but otherwise PRINT IT! great shot.

Yeah, the first one is a nice shot...the second is a bit dark, maybe lighten slightly....You had a great shot the first time...keep it up...
