I have the chance to pick one of these up, but he says its 6 years old but in mint condition. anything I should look out for in this lens? I know the 28-75 has some somewhat regular problems (but I don't think he'd keep a bad lens for 6 years). anyways, he says he used it on a EOS 35mm mount. This thing should work alright... right? thanks :)

Check it on your camers. If its not compatable you will get an error 99. But if it makes any differance tamron has a pretty good track record with lens compatability.

Hi Greyson,
welcome to the forum.
Just let me put one thing straight ... the Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR DI does NOT have 'somewhat regular problems'.
Out of the very many happy users of this lens, there are SOME users that received copies of the lens that were not sharp and had these promptly replaced by Tamron. Other than that, it's one of the best bargains you can pick up in quality optics today. :D
Some of these users (comes down to 2 or 3) made a lot of fuss about it and told everybody in any forum that wanted to hear it or didn't, to be sure
If you are looking at a prime lens that is 6 years old, there should be no other problems than normal wear and tear. If a user doesn't look after his lens, it can be broken after 6 months, but if he uses them decent, they might be as good as out of the box 6 years later. You have to check it. As to technical progress, I'd guess that any 10 year old prime lens is as good as they are today, as most of the technical progress (ultra low dispersion glasses, asymmetric lenses, diffractive optics, ... ) mainly helped to improve zoom lenses.
Best regards,
Andy

I don't know how old my Tamron 90 macro is (got it used in Dec. 2002), but it works fine on my D60. Haven't (that I recall) tried it on the 20D yet.

thanks guys, what I meant by "regular" problems was that the problem seems to regularly occur every 10 or so lenses... or so I heard (maybe from one of 'those' ppl) haha. I'm actually planning on getting the 28-75 as a walk around.

Take a look at this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=49000).
You can do the math.
Best regards,
Andy
