Now that the Canon DSLR Speed Challenge #94--OLD has come to a close, I now have the honour of selecting one photograph out of many brilliant entries as the winner of this challenge.
First and foremost I wish to thank the entrants for making my job difficult, for you have posted some great photographs, however, I can only choose one for the top spot.
I will post a brief critique of every entrant followed by my choice for the winner of this speed challenge. I am by no means a professional critique-er, however I will attempt to convey how I look at and am drawn into your images as best I can: what I like and or what I would like to have seen.
So here goes, in order of posting:
mikerault (Mike) "Amsterdam" : I love contrast and your image has it. I like your old subject's pose, along with his old bike. However, my eye keeps drifting to the upper left and right corners of your image to what appears to be a drop box and an ATM. I think a tighter crop would isolate your subject better, or perhaps opening up your lens to f/4.5 with that lens. Otherwise a great capture.
MSJGD (Jean-Guy) "In China..." : I am always impressed with your captures, Jean, including this one. That is one old seat that has seen some duty over the years. I like how your image is desaturated and that my eye is drawn to the seat. I think I would have gone with a tighter composition, but that's just me. Great work.
airfrogusmc (Allen) "Old lock and door" : Another technique I really like is the use of a limited DOF to isolate a subject, as you have done here with your capture, Allen. Rule of thirds WITH rust along with texture. Very nice indeed. I'd like to see a hair more contrast, but that's me. Simple yet effective.
tonylong (Tony) "Spiked" : Wood, rust and texture, always very nice along with some great compression with your 100-400. I enjoy your subjects but my eyes keep drifting to the bright dead space on top. Now it may be my monitor but your image appears a hair over expossed--could be my monitor. Good capture.
Nistelrooydude (Henry) "Madam one-tooth" : That is one old woman, and that tooth is priceless. I'm not thrilled with the vignette, but I do love the exposure. I would really love to see her face closer, with all of those fabulous wrinkles and that glorious tooth. Very nice capture.
John_B (John) "Hello Old" : Yeah, rust, metal and wood with an old object. Nice composition with nice lighting. I wish that old photograph on the wall behind the phone's rusty mouthpiece was not there, but it's not bad. Nice border, too. Good work.
drchrisdvm2009 (Chris ?) "A little Rusty" : That car has sure seen some hisrtory, and those bullet holes add to the drama of the capture. Once again, I would like to be closer to the subject to really appreciate the bullet holes and the light shining through those holes onto the interior of the car. Very nice capture.
Flo (Gail) "Untitled" : Simple and effective. I love the shadow of the handle and the shading of the door. I looked at this image at several different orientations trying to see if one worked better--your's is the best angle. Very nice capture.
Daniel2000 (Daniel) "Lock Down" : I really like old buildings, and looking at a capture like yours gets me to thinking about that building's history. Straight forward composition with lots of texture from the bricks to the peeling paint on the doors. Very nice post, if any. I would like to be closer to the doors and the surrounding bricks, but that's just me. Very nice capture.
dilorenzo1954 (Ed) "Ol' Harvey" : Ed, you are another photograper whose images I always enjoy looking at. Metal, rust, contrast, texture with a very interesting subject, I like it. I like your pp, but I'm not a huge fan of the vignetter even though I understand the reason for using it. However, the technique that you used works. Very nice photograph.
Kendoway (Chris) "Battle scarred old male lion..." : That lion has seen some action! Reminds me of what Scar from The Lion King would look like in the flesh. I love the tight composition, and the eyes are intense with a story behind them. Very nice.
Geno DM (Geno ?) "Old Pier" : What a beautiful capture. Color and compostion are wonderful. There is a 'dream-like' quality working here, it's so ethereal. Excellent work.
lavanut (?) "Ol' Glory" : Wonderful, tight compostion...nicely positioned. I like the taters. I would like to see Ol' Glory herself 'pop' a bit more, otherwise, nice capture.
William00 (William ?) "An old broken boat..." : What I really like about your photograph is the old boat and the reflection it has cast into the water. However, I am a bit distracted by the surroundings and the background. Perhaps a tighter crop will eliminate the distractions placing full attention on the boat and reflection. Still, very nice capture.
Well, that only took 90 minutes, well worth it though. You all took some great captures and made my job here hard, which is good. My critique is soley my own and based on my preferences, I hope you all take that to heart and I would expect the same of you.
After carefully examining all of your images, I have chosen
dilorenzo1954 (Ed's) Ol' Harvey as winner of this weeks competition!
Ed's capture is wonderful, it's subject is interesting and composed very well. The subject has a 'character' that fits it's name quite aptley...Ol' Harvey.
Congrats Ed, and now the duty of the next challenges lays upon your feet now.
And once again, thank you all for participating in Speed Challenge #94 --OLD, great captures everyone!

Nice choice on a winner, Jason, and kudos to you for a fun challenge and for all the thoughtful comments. I thought all the photos (and photographers) did well with interpreting the theme!
BTW, I thought about upping the color a bit more on the flag, but it was an old flag. Too much more saturation made it look like a tattered new flag, and that wasn't the look I wanted. Thanks for the comments and observations for mine and the others' shots!

Congrats, Ed, and thanks, Jason for your time and helpful words! You are all welcome. As has been stated before, photographers take time and effort in their captures and deserve constructive feedback. If someone's critique can help me take a better photograph through their perspective and experience, I'm all for it.
Ed, it's funny that you chose Family Gatherings as your challenge, since my in-laws kindly asked me NOT to bring my camera over for Easter celebrations...;)

Very nice images Phil, however, If you were posting to compete in this challenge it has long since been judged and a winner declared (2 1/2 months ago).
Keep an eye out for the latest competitions; this challenge will be at #106 very soon...
