I think this was mentioned in an earlier post but I can confirm the 350D auto power off works only when set to 1 minute.
This is a battery killer so be warned.
Watch the canon site for the first firmware upgrade.

Could you guys set your 350,s to a 2 second auto off time and let me know what happens?

Ok
just tried it at 2mins (i assume you meant mins and not secs) and it didnt go off. 1min was ok and 4mins are ok as well.
strange.

Cool!

So far then I just need to avoid the 2 min setting.

Cheers buddy

I just did a quick check with both 1min and 2min settings. Both work without a hitch.

I wonder if there is a difference between the 350D and the XT?

Ok
Just took battery out because 4mins stopped working.
Now 2mins and 4mins work.
firmware needs updating now.

It would be helpful to the other XT users if you mention your firmware version when you mention what you think is either good or bad performance.

Maybe there is a trend.

I may be wrong on this, but I believe the firmware is the same on all XT's since there hasn't been a firmware upgrade available. Someone correct me if I'm wrong? Whatever the case may be, my wife's XT has firmware version 1.0.1.

time for a firmware upgrade.

Firmware 1.0.1, works as advertised when set to 2 minutes.

For the people reporting it does not work: did you leave your camera in menu mode or was it ready to shoot? My camera shuts off when it is in the shooting mode, I can imagine that it remains powered when left in menu mode.

I will give that a try in about 40 minutes, if not, Jessops here I come.

No i put it in to shooting mode. tried various program modes as well.
Tried it a few times today and it shuts off at 2,4,8 mins.
it didnt yesterday though. only 4mins till i took the battery out.

My XT does not auto-power-off when set to 4 minutes, firmware version 1.0.1. I have not tried other settings yet. I certainly hope this is simply a firmware bug and will be fixed soon.

It has been indicated by several people that this 'bug' is gone after temporarily removing the battery. Perhaps this works for all cameras showing this 'issue'. If this is true, please remember that the battery has to be charged outside the camera anyway, so the problem should be gone after recharging the battery ;)

It worked for me.
Well when I say removed the battery I mean both the main power and the date/time coin cell.

I didnt take the cell battery out but taking the main one out worked.

I have tried removing the main and backup battery, it did not solve the problem with my camera.

I see one of the other forum members was first to spot the firmware upgrade for the 350D to alleviate this problem.

Congratulations, you won an all expenses paid, family trip to Aregate.

I set mine to 15 minutes and used one battery (that was NOT drained) after 9 hours of more or less constant shooting on saturday. Took a bit over 700 images and know I could get more.

Firmware 2.0 solves the issue...

Edit: I meant 1.0.2, the 2.0 is the 20D one...

I just did the upgrade to 1.0.2 ... it was very easy and so far my 350d is still working ... fingers crossed!
