Im currently looking at getting some more memory cards. I want at least 8gb of storage. I was thinking of buying 2 4gb ones as i dont really like the fact of all those picture on one 8gb card so think it will be safer for 2 4gb ones. Now i have a 400d and i do some flash work, have a small studio set upand some of camera flash work for some wildlife. So what cards would you reccomend? I want scandisk ones but is it worth the extra cost from Ultra to Extreme?

reg < ultra < extreme

the higher you go the faster the read/write speed. If your shoot things that requre you to have high write speed, then get it. If not then dont worry about it.

I have one 4gb extreme III and 2 other 4gb's cards, both ultra 2's

I currently use 4x 4gig Extreme III cards.. I have been looking at getting a couple of larger cards for Video if i decide to stick the 5Dmk2 in a housing for diving.

For a 400d you wont see any improvement from the Ultras to the extremes. The camera wont use the additional speed.

What you might find is that using a card reader the transfer speed is faster and that you also get a file recover programme with the Extremes (touch wood you neve need it though)

I did buy an extreme as i was thinking about future camera purchases when i bought it.

If you're mainly going to be doing flash photography, the card's performance in-camera will be irrelevant - the flash recycle time will be your limitation. Where a faster card will make a difference is in downloading files onto your computer.

There are discounts now on Sandisk cards, with mail-in rebates. Check B&H and Adorama sites. Guys here have complained about lengthy times for rebates, but they get them. Makes the cards dirt cheap.

I am looking at them now- --- I just HATE mail in rebates though! But it might be worth suffering through the rebate crap......

BTW, I've read that the rebate comes in the form of a debit card, but money back is money back. It is a hassle, but some of the savings are about 40-50%.

Yea--- I am reading and analyizng the rebate amounts right now-- I have the pdf open in a screen trying to debate which 3 to get to maximize the rebate with my needs.

Sometimes this is true, i've gotten checks before, though. http://www.entertainment-place.info/smile/img/2465/o09a0208gstn/POTNsmile.gif

If you want to see throughput comparison tests of your camera with these cards, go to robgalbraith.com and check their database.

Only as far as in the camera value is concerned...

For flash cards the trick is figuring out the write speed of the camera - quick research shows the 400D to be in the 12-15MB/s max write speed range, so any card faster then 15MB/s is fairly useless (unless you plan to upgrade within 2 years) and you are likely to not notice much difference for anything 10MB/s or faster write speed.

Thus for a 400D it seems you might get a very minor benefit from going from ultra to extreme III, but no value for the 400D in going to an extreme IV. If the price is significantly different then the Ultra will be your best value and you are unlikely to notice much difference versus the price.

Outside of the camera, there are people who want faster card to computer speed, so if that is a factor, then the faster the card the better.

Unless you are shooting long bursts on high speed, the only advantage of a faster card is in transferring to a computer.

With larger cards that can be a significant advantage.
