Did you encounter the same problem?
I have the 300D on hand, and frequently use it with my EF17-40mm L lens. When comparing one image in landscape format, and one in portrait format, shooting with the same setting the image is sharper in the latter format!
I found that this happens when I use long exposure with a tripod. (I always shoot for long exposure time with a tripod). So I wonder whether it is caused by the shake motion caused by the rise up of mirror when I press the shutter.
My later findings find that with the same lens attached on 350D, no such problem occurs.
