I need some suggestions on a good sharp walk around lens, tamron 28-75,canon 24-70,or maybe the canon 28-135 is ? I really need to go as cheap as possible but still get nice sharp photos. Please give me your opinions I am new to the digital slr world. Thank you ahead of time for any thoughts!

I really need to go as cheap as possible but still get nice sharp photos.

That means Tamron 28-75/2.8 or Canon 50/1.8 (though this would be rather limiting).

Best regards,
Andy

I'm sorry I did not mean the canon 24-70 (to expensive) I meant the 17-85 IS

Still

The Tamron is cheaper and will give sharper photos than the 17-85.

You will lose wide angle and IS, so you have to judge how important these are to you.

I assume that from 17-28, the kit lens will give the 17-85 a run for its money as far as sharpness is concerned. The difference should be more obvious on the long end. There was a thread yesterday comparing 17-85, 18-55 and Sigma 18-50, if I correctly remember.

Best regards,
Andy

My vote also goes to Tamron28-75, but sometimes it's not wide enough.
If you are looking for really cheap one, the other kit lens (EF-S18-55) should be fine lens for the price.

This was the thread that you mean I suppose.

Take a look at the detailed comparison on pbase as mention by Ron Chappel

The 17-85 is the clear winner in my opinion at least regarding the optical properties, it is not the cheapest solution though

Do a search for "walkaround lens" and I'm sure you'll find 10+ topics discussing it.

Okay... of the 3 lenses I own, I would have to say that the EF 28-135/3.5-5.6 IS makes a great walk around lens if you want to leave the camera bag behind. The only thing I would not suggest using the EF 28-135 for is taking action shots like the ones at your son/daughter's soccer game... the focus just isn't fast enough. The Tamron 28-75/2.8 is a great walk-around lens, but there are times I wish I could reach just a little further. Some say that the 70-200/4 makes a good walk around lens, and I would agree, but again sometimes I loose a shot because I'm too close. I would say, choose YOUR walk around lens based on the type of photography you're gonna be doing... all three of my lenses will work, but I have to pick the lens depending on situation and whether I need/want to carry my bag with me or not. Some primes (50mm/1.8 or 85mm/1.8) might make a good walk-around lens, but I don't own either yet so I can't really say.

Well, then don't walk AROUND, walk towards your objective

Since I got my 50/1.8 MKI, I have been using it more and more as my walk-around lens (instead of the Tamron 28-75/2.8 ), especially in the evening. It provides tack sharp images at f/2.8 and is certainly very much usable at f/2.0.
You are missing a lot by withholding a measly 70$ from Canon

Best regards,
Andy
