Sadly my 300TL won't work with the D30 - what's the best cheap alternative? I don't use one much and don't want the expense of the 430/550ex. Does anyone have any experience of using a Cobra 440AF?

Many thanks

I would go pick up a Canon 420EX.

They aren't that expensive (~$170-$180 USD), really good, AND can be slaved to a 550EX (or other IR controller), should you decide to get one of those later on down the road. This is the flash I use on a regular basis.

I too have had very good luck with the 420 EX. I've read good reviews of the Sigma flashes as well. But the 420 is pure Canon, works well and isn't that much more.

My location lighting kit is 1 550, 2 420 EX, with stands and umbrellas. They work really well - inside. The wireless doesn't work very well outside (even at close range).

But until I got the 550, I was very happy with the 420.

Any flash can be improved with an off camera bracket and a light modifier like an 80/20 or softbox. I'm also not shy about having an assistant (either working for me or just snagged at the wedding/event) hold the flash off camera for me.
