View Full Version : Anyone claimed the new UK rebate?

Has anyone claimed one of the rebates at www.canonextrapromotion.com (http://www.canonextrapromotion.com/) for an item bought from the US or HK? The FAQ implies that the product must be bought in a qualifying country but the terms and conditions say that only the end user must be in a qualifying country.

I just want to know whether it's worth my while sorting out receipts and filling in forms if my B&H-sourced lens purchase is going to be rejected out of hand.

I seem to recall on the 300d offer last year that the item had to be bought in the EU. I guess if you know someone in the US who can accept the money and send it to you then there should be equivalent US offers on the go right now too.

I guess you can see their point a bit, the European operation has a separate profit line to the US one and the Asian one.

I received the vouchers today. I don't think US & Asian will be accepted.

"For the cash back to apply, the products on the above list must be purchased in either of those countries"

Thing is... does this also mean 7-day-shop won't be valid either, being in the Channel Islands?

Thats what I want to know too Fat Pete. I have also received my vouchers today so would like someone to clarify this point as I had planned on buying from 7dayshop. I thought that Channel Islands / Guernsey would still come under the umbrella of "United Kingdom"?

I can never remember which way around it goes for the Channel Islands; it's either that they are in the UK but not part of Great Britain or part of GB but not the UK...I think it's the second one.

LOL who would have thought it would be so complicated!!!

Did a bit of googling and according to thisisguernsey.com - "The island of Guernsey is British, but not part of the United Kingdom nor the European Union."

If that is the case and I understand Canon's T&C's correctly then 7dayshop purchases are not going to qualify. :(

That was my understanding as well. I guess Canon are the only ones who can tell us! I've been trying to find a phone number/email address regarding the promotion, but I think I'm going blind :)

Cheapest UK-based price I can find for the 70-200 F4 L is around £480 I think, so the cashback price makes it pretty much the same as 7-day-shop's normal price.

A similar thread has popped up on dpreview - looks like the official word from Canon is 'No' for 7DayShop.

What happens if you buy your camera from the UK and then get the rebate from an accessory bought from 7dayshop? Will Canon UK allow that?

Wonder no more.

Here is the response from 7day shop as I asked them directly.

Your post - 01/04/2005 - 11:00
Do you know whether the canon lens discount vouchers will be accepted when buying through yourselves. I assume these will be classed as grey imports.
Thanks.

Sorry, I'm afraid they are not applicable to our stock.

So now you know.

Would it hurt to try?

If you have the barcode from the box you could make your own reciept with a UK address on it.
How do they know you haven't bought a grey import from a UK seller?

I am guessing here, but maybe the barcode is different for different regions.

You might get lucky though, but I believe that they look for any reason not to pay out, so may be very stringent checking details. I would also imagine that they will have a database of who has sold what (for marketing purposes) and 'Franks Fotos' may raise a few eyebrows!

I have just bought a 17-40L from Hong Kong
I will give it a try and report back.

Malum's Lenses being a small (one item in fact) shop in my part of town.

How is it that they then charge U.K. V.A.T ! ?

I believe that they don't technically charge the VAT, rather pay the vat on behalf of the importer (person that buys it in the uk), so it won't then get charged in the uk.

It seems a much more transparent way of doing things. Otherwise you have the very cheap prices and the lottery of import charges. I guess the vat people are happy to not have to do any work to claim all the vat back. Everyone's happy.

Yes that's right. The courier performs the "import" and pays customs. The courier then charges back to either the recipient (usually) or the sender.
