Having a large collection of images taken in the pre-digital era is there any viable way to convert the collection to digital images?

Time and cost are both equally issues, the collection numbers in thousands. Scanning 4 at a time is not viable.

When I send off film to be processed, the prints come back and so do a little CD rom of a collection of images that were on the film and in print.

Not sure if that's the same everywhere but maybe it is

Its not negatives I'm talking about its prints. Its these prints I need put on disc.

You either have to scan them, or pay someone (probably a lot of money, unless you can find a poor college kid with a free weekend or two and a scanner) to scan them for you. There's actually an ad on my local craigslist that says they'll do this sort of thing, but it isn't cheap (and rightfully so with the amount of time it takes).
