Hi,
I need a camera for macro work (jewellery and insects) and general photography, landscapes, people, etc. I have a chance to get an A570IS for a good price, and am wondering if it will suit my purposes. If not, can someone suggest a better camera? (I'm on a limited budget, <$200)
Thanks,
....... john

To be honest there are lots of "better" cameras out there but the A570IS is pretty good value for what you get.

It's not a bad camera at all. I bought my wife one a while back, and I use it too when I don't want to carry my other gear around. It's capable of giving some decent results. It's obviously not a 1Ds mark III but it doesn't cost that much either! It's well worth the money.

You can get A570IS refurbished for less than 80$, but you will need accessories to shot insects. But I don't think you will reach the 200$.

Hi,
Well, I thought $100 CDN was a pretty good price. Maybe not...eh? What camera would you suggest then?

It's a kickass camera, go for it. Check out some of the older photos in my flickr stream.

Sorry not being clear; I meant you will not need more than your 200$.

Well, I've taken some pretty darned good shots with it, I think. You can see them here (look in album A570 IS):

(I also posted some in this thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=657413)

What else he would need ? Do you think those accessories can be bought less than 200$ ? I thought even a decent flash would cost something around 200$. I like to know coz I want to buy some stuff for macro photos too. :)

You can't mount a flash on the A570IS, or I haven't hacked mine to add one.

He'd need a lens adapter and close-up lenses. Those can be had for $100 or less. Pricing on a separate slave flash would run you more, but it can be done; you wouldn't be able to use an external flash instead of the built-in one.

Thank you all. I think I'm going to look for something I don't have to add a whole lot to, in order to do what I want.
Thanks,

I haven't seen an a570IS refurb for any less than $100.

Where have you seen it for $80?

Well, it doesn't have a hot shoe, but he can certainly mount and use a Canon HF-DC1 flash with it.

On Adorama 570IS is less than 80$, and yes I read about a flash than can be attached with a bracket (using the tripod mount) and it is triggered by the main flash.
