Unfortunately dropped our trusty 860 into the sea and INS co. say that can replace with 870. Any comparison ?

Also they have said we could upgrade, we've looked at 990. Does anyone know what the shutter lag is for 990 as 860 was particularly good !

870 has a 28mm wide angle lens similar to the 860.
I believe the new ixus990 starts at 37mm. Can't comment on shutter lag of the 990 as its rather new.
Wide angle lens is more useful IMO = Ixus 870 IS

While dithiolium is correct about the 28mm lens the 990 has manual controls including flash output, focus and shutter speed, an optical finder, and a larger image sensor. This makes it more attractive as a carry around camera to someone who also has an SLR (or in my case I used to have a film SLR) . If you don't need the manual you might be happier with the 870. The 990 can produce some amazing shots and you have lots of resolution for cropping
