Hello all
new to the canon system and looking for lenses, I have found a 28-70 2.8 for around $800 is the 24-70 that much better, I realize the wide end is better but I have a 17-35 2.8 to use there, would I be better off saving a few $ and getting the 28 or spend it and grab the 24, the 28 is L series USM if that makes any difference so I think the lenses are about equal in quality
thanks for the help
Dennis

I don't think it's that much better.

I just "upgraded" to the 24-70mm only because I foud a good deal on a new one. But I have been quite satisfied with the 28-70mm,.. and now that I have the 24-70mm I am unsure why I bothered.

There are many I have read who say there is a more significant differnce,.. I am not seeing it. They are both extremely superb high quality (heavy!) lenses that seem to get the job done well!

Thanks for the quick reply, I think I can get it for 750 shipped and the 24-70 seems to be strong 900 or higher so I think I had better buy while I can,
thanks again

I'm very satisfied with my 28-70, I'd say if you don't need the 4mm in the wide end and get a good price for the older lens, go for it (assuming it's a fine copy).

I have 28-70mm and I am satisified with it. I think you may go for 24-70mm unless you get a good bargain on 28-70mm. Both of them are great lens and that 4mm can tell a difference.

I have the 28-70L and have had the opportunity to compare with 24-70. There appears to be very little difference other then of course 24-28mm. The 24-70 has a slight advantage except at f5.6 where the 28-70 has a slight lead and f8 where they seem to tie.
Both have similiar bokeh qualities.

The only real advanatge to 24-70L is the 24-28 range and it is newer. If you can find a good used 28-70L at that price you can't go wrong.

Just my opinion,

From what I understand, they are of very similar design, but the 24 has the advantage of the additional range at the wide end. On the 1D2, that is very useful IMHO.

In other words, what it boils down to is whether or not you want that extra wide-angle range. Otherwise, they are very similar.

While this may not matter to some of you, it may to others:
The 24-70 has TWO advantages over the 28-70, not just one.

1. 4mm wider, this allows a wider angle without having to change lenses, while useful this may not be a vital point for many.

2. The 24-70L has weather sealing which the 28-70L does not. This could be important to anyone that shoots outdoors in all weather. This is also worth considering for those with a 1 series body, as the 1 series digitals are also weather sealed.
