This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 72hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #176".

This is all about having fun so have at it!!!

This round will end Fri 4/10 at 10:00 PM EST

I shot these lil' bunnies through my livingroom patio window this morning actually & with Easter coming up this weekend, these little guys come up at a good time for an edit. ;)

Bunny's!!!:D

Well here is my 5 cents :):
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t173/masterwillems/bunnyscopy.jpg

Cropped
Brightness/contrast adjusted
Color Balance (more green in mid tones, more blue in highlights)
Hue/Saturarion adjusted
photo filter (orangje filter)
Shadow/Highlight adjusted
Burntool twice for the grass beneath the bunny's

Cropped
Levels adjustment layer
Hue Saturation adjustment layer -
Adjusted green channel H -8 S -35 L -24
Adjusted Yellow channel H 17 S -30 L 0
Selected bunnies and copied to new layer - I was going to paint them bright pink. Didn't like what it looked like, so I settled for a slight pink color burn overlay.
Ran out of time, and it was getting uglier by the minute :D

Autolevels
Pasted in the basket and egg
Erased parts that werent needed
Adjusted brightness/contrast and shadows/highlights on pasted parts to help match main photo
Cropped 4.5x6 ratio at 300 ppi which gave a much larger canvas (approx. 1800x1350)
Applied gaussian blur to basket and egg
Nik bi-color filter
Resized 1024x768
Slight sharpen on bunnies
Vignette
Text

I'm sure someone else can make it look more convincing but this is the first time I tried some pasting and text stuff and I had alot of fun!

In LR2

Created 3 images, adjusted 1 each 2 stops either way, merged 3 via enfuse
Bumped wb +8 to the yellow, exposure 1/2 stop, recovery +24, blacks +16, popped the red channel a bit, and applied some basic sharpening.
Then made a copy

Copy 1 -- Adjusted clarity +23, Vibrance 24
Copy 2 -- Adjusted clarity -69, Vibrance 21

This gave me one sharp bright copy, and one hazy darker copy

In CS4

Loaded both images onto own layer
With layer mask, burned the sharp bunnies into the hazy background
Pumped up sharpening via smart sharpen on bunnies 60%
Flattened layers
Cloned out snow at top
Switched to LAB color mode, selected A channel with soft light
Copied background in muliply mode and added vignette with rectangular marquee tool
Smart sharpen at 90%

Let's see...all photoshop...
Duplicate layer, overlay 100%, hue/saturation to an orange tint; created layer mask and left strongest effects around the rabbits.

Duplicate layer again, overlay 100%, inverted layer, high pass 3.5px then gaussian blur 0.8px - gives a glow/blur and causes coarse detail to be brought out less. Created layer mask, again focused mostly on the center area with the rabbits and erased most of the rest.

Duplicate original layer again, color dodge 23%, brightens/intensifies localized areas a little. Created layer mask, primarily around the rabbits again and erasing the rest.

Original layer got a minor color adjustment, increasing reds and yellows in midtones, highlights and shadows.

Created new layer, overlay 50%, gradient from black at top to transparent by about 1/3 of the way down. Used to darken the background.

Created another new layer, overlay 100%, painted areas black to enhance darkness around the rabbits, but doesn't hit them. This layer gives most of the depth in the image.

Healing brush to remove the blue object in the top background.

Flattened image and sharpened 0.2px 500%.

Not necessarily in that order or in such an orderly fashion. Again I hope I don't win because I don't have time or suggestions/ideas for the next game.

Oh, I pretty much forgot what I did in PS  I really am only a ham at this, esp with a small starting image, but it was fun.

Um, levels into the meat of the histogram a bit first, then colour balance to warm it up. Sorry can't remember the numbers, just moved sliders only a couple each way. got rid of some stuff and tried to clone in where the lettuce cut off the bottom of bugs (very poorly I might add), did a crop and then usm about .2 @ 50 or so. then blurred the surroundings to try and remove some of the noise in the OOF area. I think that's about it. I did try and get rid of the other bunny but couldn't get the cloning right, so "bum" bunny stays :)

Though I was tempted to go with a pot of boiling water, and a head shot of Glenn Close laughing maniacally – I managed to restrain myself. :)

Cropped to one bunny, as they other bunny was only showing booty butt.
Cloned out all the dead leaves and brown grass for a more spring-like feel.
Levels and curves
Unsharp mask (100%, .05 pix, threshold 0)
Distort filter – Diffuse Glow (low grain, mid glow, mid clear)
Easterish frame.

Yeah I know it's late so it won't count but I wanted to post it anyways.
Ok I could not find any eggs that would work for this photo or bunny ears (my original plan) so I went a totally different route.

-Cropped
-Used Nik Viveza to brighten the colors, add contrast and saturation as well.
-Tried to make one of the bunnies look as if he had white on him.
-Added watch and card
-Border and caption.

MJA - YAY Easter! :) vingette is abit strong tho.
mattograph - your edits always intrigue me, this has a very interesting look to it, to bad you didnt crop out the left hand side, there's a dark line.
form - my husband likes the colors of your edit the best & said he would pick yours if it were him that had to pick, I told him you didnt want to win... he said, that's to bad, cause he likes it ;)
pixelbasher - you know... I didnt realize that the lettuce bothered me, until you removed it... I really like it not being there... although I can tell it was removed, I REALLY like it not being there. Great job!
Kendoway - LOL... next time I win... I am going to request an all out 'add in' photoshop battle, because oh man would the pot of boiling water been funny, I love photoshop 'add ins', thank you for cleaning up my yard btw, if only photoshop could REALLY do that for me ;)

Congratulations to pixelbasher.

Tracey - I'm dating myself here, but your edit evoked an instant memory of a concert I attended and the song White Rabbit by Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane. Too funny.

Yeah when I saw the bunnies the first thing that popped into my head was the alice shoot I did a while back. That and they reminded me of the baby bunnies in our backyard a few years ago.

Far out! :D

I thought I had blown it with my feeble attempt at lettuce removal as it looks like bugs is floating on a magic carpet! I have no idea how to draw individual grass back over him to make it look more realistic.

Ok, so do I start a new thread called "before and after #176" or just label my next post here with an image ? Either way, as a reasonable newby, I have a fair collection of shots that need to be fixed up!

Cheers

You start a new thread - use the first post from this thread as the template and update it with the #176, a photo and the new 72 hour deadline. Have fun!
