A couple of shots of some cool top shelf RC toy$.
The heli was shot with my 17-85 and the F-16 turbine powered beast was shot with my 100-400L
Cheers

Nice shots. The f-16 s pretty sweet, but I couldn't imagine spending that much money on an RC plane. My foamies are expensive enough.

joking!, but I know what you mean. My Rc stuff is at the lower end of the price scale too. The F-16 prob owes him around A$13K. or about the cost of a 600 F4 prime! As far as I am aware though, a prime lens has never burst into flames ! This thing just burst into flames on start up. Later in the day it did it again when the propane they use to start them had a leak, filled the fuse and ignited. It blew the bottom of the fuse out. I didn't see it happen, but I sure heard it!

Nice shots!
i to now only own foamies - spend lots of money on planes!
Now i just make home made wings and stuff using my wire cutter and alike!
Rc jets = Remortage house :D
great pictures tho, very sharp!

Great shots. I've heard that the jets can & do explode but luckily haven't been there when one did. The season starts up here very soon, and I'll be out shooting them then but for now just enjoy seeing everyone elses photos.

Nice
Love the angle on the heli. Been too long away from it. I cant even tell what brand it is.

I thought everything was electric these days? :) j/k, love the smell/sound of Nitro.
Nice shots, and that jet is sic!

Very nice shots! Was that pavement that bounced light into the F-16?

photosguy: yes the pavement. You can just see it in the background of the burning plane. It's actually a full size private runway. There was a huge scale fly-in (all types, but had to be larger than 80" span) last weekend a few hours away. It was held at Dick Smiths property. Dick Smith is a very well known aviator, businessman, adventurer. Kind of an aussie Richard branson I guess.
Desertraptor: It's an avant aurora. 90 size.
I'm not really a heli guy, but I wanted to have a go at shooting them. I wanted to get the rotor disc happening, but the heli guys I spoke to on the day prefered to see a spread blade, not a whole disc. They reckon it gets too messy and hard to see the heli.....who am I to argue, and it made my job easier!
Here is the video of the same flight at my club if you're keen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwHMAWwWMss
The pilot is VERY good. from about 5 minutes on is around the time I shot this one. I took a bunch of course, but that was my favorite.
Here is an F-22 Raptor turbine another guy flew. I found this one much harder to shoot. It was hard enough to simply see at a distance, the camo job obv works well!

Honestly, I think you could show that F22 to someone on the street and they would have no idea its an RC plane.

Hey, I just did lighten my L load by one today. :)
Thankfully my lens has never exploded for no apparent reason. My easystar however, it has for no apparent reason flown into the ground and various trees and exploded. Thankfully, glue and duct tape is cheap!

how fast can/could they get the jets to go?

Great shots! Does the gear retract on those jets? That F-16 shot is smoking!

Very nice pics. I love heading out to our local field and watch the planes. No one with a jet though.

Thanks everyone, it's nice to know my shots are starting to come out better and better each time i go out.
someone asked about the speed of the jets. i belive in aus at least they are limited to 200 MPH by the controlling body, but their potential is much higher than that. The problem with going faster is the plane gets very small very quick at those speeds! esp with camo paint!
Funny thing is, these are not the quickest remote control planes around. Dynamic Soaring (gliders) are the fastest RC planes. the world record is around 400 MPH.....yes 400! , no engine. Youtube search for DS world record if you are interested. The fast hills are around California. Interesting technique flown in a circular pattern, but makes for obscene speeds.
The landing gear does retract, but both had issues in the flights. the F-22 had a closing sequence error by the look of it as the wheels came up after the outer doors closed, meaning the closed doors made the wheels poke out, which looked a bit silly in the photos. I would have loved a nice gear up shot, but alas they are very fussy things it appears. Under the canopy is a mass of electronics, wiring, and a lot of Jet-A fuel. When you hear them they sound no different at all to any turbine engine, you keep looking around for a 737 when you hear them spool up! The only difference is the magnitude of the sound.
With the F-16 the last flight his wheels stayed down for some reason the whole flight. I managed to get one shot of the first F-16 flight with wheels up but they are so hard to track at full noise.

Did that heli complete that inside loop?
pixelbasher
9th of April 2009 (Thu), 22:45
If you go back and check the youtube link I posted earlier on the actual heli flight. It did do many loops, and much much more :)
He wasn't actually looping in the shot, picture the heli stuck to a pole 30ft above your head by the boom and move it back and forward like you wave a flag, that's what this maneuver was, but don't know the name.

Did they break the 400MPH DS?
Last i heard it was 395.6 MPH i know that sounds petty but i have done some DS in my time and people get REAL funny about actual speeds :D
Love the F22

That's why I said around 400
As far as I know it's still 392 by Spencer Lisenby at Lake Isabella CA 3-9-09

Well it seemed it's not only you guys like a couple of my shots. I found 2 of them on an AUSsie remote control JETS website last night. And yes there is some cryptic caps lock in that sentence ;)
I don't believe they were taken from here as I posted them on an aussie forum at the time as well.
thing is, the guy thought it was my problem as I "should be carefull who I pass them out to" and "they where given to me by someone and wasn't aware that they were from a commercial source"
thing that bothers me with his reply is, these people don't care for any form of copyright laws, and two I informed him it wasn't from a commercial entity, but that didn't matter anyway. I told him it was HIS perogative to find out who the owner of the photos where. He obv. thinks that unless they are from a commercial source, they are a free for all. I quickly directed him to our copyright laws regarding the use of images.
I suggested he get in touch with me to discuss purchasing them off me, or remove them ASAP. Seems he obv. wanted to use my shots, but only for free, as they are now gone from the site. I figured this as he would have contacted me first. The RC community isn't that big in Aus and I am fully contactable on that forum.
He had them displaying in a flash image thing. He also has other full size jet photos of the same craft he sells that are still there. Prob ripped from airliners.net or the like. I mentioned to him that I assumed he doesn't own the rights to those photos either. ;)
The annoying part is I enjoyed sharing my photos with the other users, guys were using my good ones as PC backgrounds etc, it gave me a buzz knowing they liked them enough to do that, but all it took was one guy to rip them and I have since pulled all my shots this morning. There was over 50 or so jets, heli and scale planes up there for personal use. I even said in bold print they where not to be used for commercial use without my written permission but alas, some couldn't give a hoot about that stuff.

Here are a couple of photo's of radio controlled aircraft I have taken at model airshows that use turbine engines.
Concorde has a 13 foot long fuselage and it also has a fully working drooping nose section for landing and take-offs.
The Airbus has a 20 foot wingspan.
I have seen several models with 22-24 foot wingspans so they do get very large.

Nice shots, I used to fly RC but had to give it up. I thought the more I flew the easier it would get (on my nerves that is). It did become easier to fly them but I was never fully at ease while the plane was in the air and slowly I became a nervous wreck; even to the point of starting to get the shakes on the way to the air field. I find photography a much more calming hobby ;)

I use to fly competitive IMAC with a 35% plane...I had around $4000 flying around up there......never bothered me much...;)
They are big for sure!
