Keep in mind that when we've been discussing 7mm shafts, it's been regarding the Photek Softlighter II. This is not a universal problem and to the best of my knowledge I haven't heard anything about 7mm shafts from other manufacturers that were not fitting correctly in Elinchrom's. I'm pretty sure the problem is an isolated one, only affecting the 7mm shafts on the Softlighter's.

There may be others but as far as I know Lastolite, Elinchrom and Photek are the only makers of 7mm shafts.

Elinchrom umbrellas are nicely made and you can find them on Amazon.
As Jannie mentioned, Elinchrom umbrellas, while pricy, are very nicely made! They are probably the nicest umbrellas I have seen, followed by Lastolite and Westcott (again, from what I have seen). I also used to have some Hensel umbrellas in the past that were of very high quality. (Actually still have them around here somewhere :)).
I own some Elinchrom umbrellas and a Lastolite Umbrella Box with 7mm shaft. AFAIK, the only other thing that will fit the Elinchrom central umbrella holder is the Photek Softlighter II (with standard size shaft, NOT the 7mm shaft!).

The little 32" silver umbrella from Elinchrom, the one that comes with the kit, is no slouch, it has a very nice textured surface and I've used it on product and detail shots where softboxes just didn't do justice at all - very nice and I've wondered if it would be a good idea to get the 41" version of the same thing. I've also used it for an edge hair light when someone has really black hair.

It depends on the kit, Aman. Some come with softboxes, some with umbrellas, some with both.

So can you suggest any cheap alternative? Which I can buy online?

I've seen many Elinchrom D kits that come with small softboxes and 400BX kits that come with small umbrellas. I think they might be packaged differently depending how the merchandiser like Adorama or Amazon order them from the manufacturer, they probably have more than one choice.
I have the little umbrellas and actually they're pretty neat, I'd rather the white shoot through umbrella was the 41" size.
My friend has the set of two small softboxes and loves them.

AFAIK, those kits come pre-packaged from the manufacturer (Elinchrom), and they change as Elinchrom decide what to include in the kits/promotions over time. So it is possible that someone like Amazon might have old stock of a kit that has not been offered for quite a while, etc...
