I would like to know about the "Sigma EF 500 DG Super for Sony Alpha."

In the details it claims to be able to go on a Canon. I have a Canon Rebel XTI and I would like to use this flash on and off camera. Would I be able to do this with this flash. This would be my first and only flash and I don't plan on doing a lot of flash photography.

sony foot can't mount on a canon. off camera will work with the built-in optical slave if you trigger it with your built in flash. but the ETTL pre-flashes will probably drive you crazy.

It can -- almost any flash can - All you need is the middle pin. The question I think you're asking is, will it be ETTL compatible? No, I don't believe it is.

It will fire just fine, but you have to control the focus and power settings.

the sony/minolta foot can not physically mount onto a canon hot shoe, or any other standard ISO hot shoe unless you buy a special adapter.

might as well buy the canon version of the 500DG to save the trouble, and it'll have ETTL as well.

edit: here's the adapter, you can buy generic ones from ebay for about $15-20
