View Full Version : Pelican cases and camera gear when checked

I fly a lot for work and have started carrying my G2 round with me. Trouble is there is just not enough room in my laptop bag for it, which means it goes in a Lowepro bag, and fumbling with two bags is always a pain when flying.
So I am thinking of buying a tiny pelican case and putting the G2 alone in there, and put the Pelican case in my checked luggage (usually a soft bag with a few clothes).
Will the G2 be okay in a little pelican case in a soft bag that doesn't offer much additional padding? I fly a couple of times a week sometimes, so it will get a lot of abuse.
Or should I get a better laptop bag and keep the G2 with me on the plane at all times ...

How much do you value your G2?
Don't check anything that you can't afford to loose or miss for an extended period of time.
Personally all my camera/laptop gear is carried on with me.

Pelican cases are extremely tough. In fact, I had a canon video camera in one, and it was in a whitewater kayak with me on a class V river in Maryland. I had just bought the boat, and had not yet outfitted it. I got caught in a hole above the longest rapid on the river, and fell out of the boat! Oh no! As I swam to safety, my boat ran the rapid by itself. Attached to the seat with a carabiner, the pelican case and my video camera were along for the ride. With the help of my friends, I recovered the boat, and the case was still attached. One side was completely covered in scuffs, scratches, and gauges. (This happens when a boat with a volume of 65 gallons filles with water (about 500 lbs of water) and pins the case against the rocks as it is pushed downriver)
I was not too optimistic when I saw the state that the case was in, but I opened it up, and it was BONE DRY inside. The camera worked fine. The padding did its job. The gasket did its job. The case did its job, and is still in use.
I reccommend pelican boxes wholeheartedly and without reservations.

I have noticed recently that many airlines are starting to enforce the 1 bag only and below xx weight as carry on. Unfortunatly my laptop and gamera gear is reaching maximum weight for hold baggage. I check the laptop (unless I need to work on the flight) and the big lenses and just have bodies and the 50 and 85 in a Billingham bag to carry on.

Most airlines have exceptions to the one bag rule for cameras and computers.

Its is a comon expression here in the uk for someone who will never bend a rule, it comes from them saying "It's more then my jobs worth to do that" implying that they will lose their job should they be caught.
It is applied to all those officious "I am important cos I have a hat" type people that annoy and frustrate the rest of us.

I have been on flights where the first 11 boarders filled up all the overhead bins with their "legal carry on size" luggage.
At that point I would love to have seen some of your "jobsworths."
Unfortunately the world is full of "rules don't apply to me" people making life unpleasant for the rest of us.
