I just got a Powershot S200 Elph for christmas, and I love it so far, but I picked up a 256MB x4 speed CF card, and I see that it is outside the specs on the camera... BUT I use things that are outside the specs on my computer daily.(my operating system, my CDR :-) So I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this camera and maxing out the memory? Will it choke on a x4 speed CF card? Can it handle more than 128MB?

Thanks:-)

I don't think any camera will "choke" on a compactflash card. Doesn't matter what the amount of memory it has on it, as long as it is a type 1 (I don't know about type 2, but its possible) I don't think it CAN choke.

Well it turns out you are right (I had already used the 256MB CF card in the camera:-) I talked with a techsupport guy @ Canon USA and he said size shouldn't be a problem. But he was not sure about the whole speed thing, so I went to the Lexar website www.digitalfilm.com and it reassured me that the CF should be 100% compatible. So I gave it a try, and it worked fine with no reformating or anything (though it showed up as 245MB, and why it would need 10+MEG of formating to run I don't know, but hay it works, it is huge, and I only need one card this way:-) now if I only had a couple of spare batteries to keep charged up so I never get stuck with a low battery blinker... :-)

The reason why you dropped to 245MB is the card was probably formatted or system files have been stored on it so the operating system can use it. You always lose some storage space. Get yourself a few rechargable batteries and a charger. The ones that charge over a long period (in my experience are better). They will save you a pile of money in the longterm.
