There were some in San Diego that wanted it to stay here to be displayed in our museum or on the Midway, but the Navy invoked ownership rights and claimed it. The truck was waiting before it was out of the water and the recovery team started disassembling it before the spectators and media had left.

The aircraft is the only known example of a SB2C-4 in the US and Pensacola doesn't have a Helldiver of any variant, so the Navy wanted it...

I wanna hear this story...

Really ... well okay ... I used to be a news photog and I was covering the California Angels in the playoffs. This was the final game in which the Angels beat Baltimore and won their first pennant. At the end of the game the hometeam crowd went nuts with people running all over the playing field, stealing the bases, et al. The Anaheim police then went nuts and started macing and beating everybody on the field, adults and young kids alike all got maced.

I shot the game from the third base press dugout. I was up in the stadium leaving when the "riot" got into full swing and snapped a few frames from the seats. On the way out I noticed some movement in a tunnel and it was this AP photog getting his faced embedded into the concrete tunnel wall by plainclothes police. So I shot them handcuffing and hauling off the AP guy. Being offended that the police were manhandling a brother photo journalist, I ran downstairs to further document the event. The above snap was the my last shot, then I turned around to make my retreat when the police grabbed me from behind (the hand in the before mentioned photo).

The Anaheim Police were notorious for their abuse of police power and decided to make an example of George, (the AP guy), and me ... so we went to trial. I was found innocent and consequently the authorities dropped the case against George. Interestingly enough, during this time one of our reporters was working on a case which put the Anaheim Police in a very bad light. After leaving the court house for my trial, she received four traffic tickets within 100 yards from the Anaheim Police.

I didn't think it was a big deal, but editors told me they received calls from newspapers all over the U.S. who were following the case.

Thanks all for your remarks ... but nahhhhh ... no big deal ... I think nearly every hard news journalist (reporters and photogs) has confrontations with " authority". Journalists have a need to discover the truth and government agents often have a need to hide the truth ... hence confrontation. Security forces are particularly vexing because they feel that they are all-powerful ... if it wasn't for a First Amendment and a court system more powerful than security agencies, the Security Agents actually would be. In other countries I probably would have ended up in the hospital than a court room.
