I have used quite a few LCD monitors and a lot of non-LCD monitors too a my job.
i have two things to say:
1. Although we had expensive non-LCD monitors in the days gone by the LCDs we have now a far better.
2. All LCDs are not good. I have tried a few that are far worse than the worst non-LCD monitors i have seen.
But the good ones are superior. I give the top-of-the line Dell monitors top marks. They are the best I have tried.
I would recomend this one:DELL 1905FP 19-inch (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?TabPage=techspecs&sku=320-4113&spagenum=&category_id=211&brandid=&k=&c=us&l=en&cs=19&mnf=&prst=&prEnd=&mnfsku=&orderby=&searchtype=&pageb4search=&page=productlisting.aspx&instock=&refurbished=)

I got a Samsung 910T that I quite like, I prefer it to my 17 inch Samsung CRT at work. Sumsung make quite good gear now, they've improved a lot in a short space of time.

I got 2001FP 20.1-inch. It is very close to the print I maded. I think LCD tech is catching up with the non-lcd monitors.

Good luck

Remember, with an LCD, you absolutely must run it at the design resolution. A 17" or 19" LCD is usually 1280 x 1024 pixels, and that's not negotiable. If you run it at anything else you'll get multiple monitor pixels fighting over each image pixel, or vice versa.

If your LCD monitor (and your computer) has a DVI connector, make sure you use that one and not the analog D-Sub (VGA) connector.

LCD monitors are digital, so it's best to use the digital DVI interface. If you use the D-Sub interface (which is the old, standard VGA connector for CRT monitors), the computer will first convert the video signal into an analog signal, and the monitor will have to re-convert it back to a digital signal. That's bad for the image quality.

By the way, I've ordered the Dell 2405 FPW, a 24 inch wide screen LCD :D I'm still waiting for it and unfortunately it seems to be taking longer than expected for Dell to send it to me (everyday when I look on the order tracking page, the expected delivery date has shifted a day into the future....).

Jesper expect it to be at least 1 week later;)

Dell is known for the bad delivery here.

at my work we ordered 4 times from Dell and all 4 times it was at least one week late.

they kept shifting the date

I have the best ViewSonic with DVI... In the winter it was rated the best in the world by all magazines....

For text is very good. For graphics it doesn't display the shadow detail... and the colors shift depending on the angle.

CRT is the way to go for graphics.

The newer models tend to have higher contrast ratio and lower response time. So that could make a difference in sharpness between old and new LCDs.

they kept shifting the date :rolleyes:I called Dell yesterday to ask them if they could tell me something about the expected delivery date, they say that the manufacturer of the LCD panels has problems to produce so many panels - it looks like a LOT of people ordered the 2405 FPW...

They said the expected delivery date for my monitor is in the second week of May !! :( So I just have to be patient.....

The newer models tend to have higher contrast ratio and lower response time. So that could make a difference in sharpness between old and new LCDs.

The manufacturers push contrast ratio, now its even 1:1500. Thing is that even professional CRT's have only 1:250 and they can show full scale of luminance from zero black to white, but even those 1:1500 LCD's can't really display to pure black. The trick they use to make dark gray LOOK like black is increasing contrast ratio to so strong it makes human eye adjust to the excessive dynamic range and this way make nearly black look like pure black in our brain. But calibation tools show the truth, it is not black :) So with very good LCD's something like 1:400 is very sufficient, all the rest is just marketing.

I also have the Samsung 910T and it surpassed my 19" Sony Trinitron in a side-by-side test so that is all I use now and I was a staunch CRT-only kinda guy before now. LCD's have now finally (without spending over $1500 like before) surpassed CRT's. But yes, beware of over-inflated specs.
