...and my parents put down an order for a Canon 70-300mm USM for me. Apparently mom did it ages ago, but the store here has to import it from US. She made them promise to send the 70-300mm III until they get the USM one. On Monday they hadn't received the non-USM one yet, but it's in the mail and my folks are going to Gothenburg now to see if it's here yet. :)
Yaaay for parents. :D
So, if I understand correctly, the only difference between the USM and non-USM is that the USM is quieter and a bit faster focus? Does it focus internally or not?
Hm, now I better get a new bag while in US. I should pick that up while buying the 50mm f/1.8 when I go there in a two weeks. ;)

Happy Birthday Claire!!! I have the 75-300/4-5.6 IS USM and it does a pretty good job if you don't need it to fast focus. Scenery, landscapes, still life all do just fine with it. Enjoy!

Many Happy Returns of theday!
Is that the 70-300 DO or the 75-300 III USM? I don't think there's a non-IS 70-300. As Maureen says, the 75-300 IS does pretty good although the speed (focussing or aperture) won't blow you away.

Happy birthday !!!! :D :D :D
You probably mean the 75-300. Canon also has a 70-300 DO IS USM, but it's a very expensive lens. The page from Canon explains the different Canon lens technologies: http://www.usa.canon.com/html/eflenses/technology/index.html
Click on "Ultrasonic" for a description of USM.

Yeah, I meant 75-300 III USM. Was really tired yesterday when I posted, so got it all wrong. My parents picked up the 75-300 III yesterday so I tried it in the afternoon. Itīs heavy! Iīm not used to that. Still, itīll be nice to have this one for nature, landscape, animal and candid people shots in summer. :)

You've probably found out by using it that the 75-300mm doesn't focus internally. The front group rotates and extends when it focuses. Circular polarizer won't be a good idea with this lens. Just a reminder, bright light or tripod WILL BE needed for this lens to work to its potential. Last but not the least, happy belated birthday!
