im going to be getting a couple new memory cards for my XS. What should i look at when shopping for one. Or does it really matter

Rob Galbraith hasn't tested the XS yet; the closest he comes is the XSi, here (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/camera_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-9424). Do you shoot RAW? Canon's spec with a 2 GB SD card is essentially limited by card capacity, so anything Ultra II or faster will be adequate. If you shoot RAW, speed will make more of a difference in clearing the buffer once it fills than in how many shots you can take in a burst without filling the buffer. In either case, a faster card will download (via good card reader) much faster than a slow card; the difference in speed will be less noticeable in the camera.

Sandisk cards have some good rebates right now at Adorama,B&H etc.

SanDisk produces reliable memory cards and is one of the more popular brands used by photographers. I believe the Canon Rebel XS utilizes the SD/SDHC memory cards and not the compact flash type. I have multiple 2GB/4GB/and 8GB CF cards for my Canon 50D.
It is recommended that you do not put all of your eggs in one basket (memory card) so-to-speak. I would certainly consider purchase soon while the rebates are still in effect.
